Obituary of Walter D. Sweeney

Walter D. Sweeney, age 66, died on Thursday, August 27, 2009. He was born in Brooklyn and had lived in Gerritsen Beach and Rockville Center before moving to Bridgewater in 1987.Walt was a proud Irishman who enjoyed listening to music as well as playing guitar and piano. In his earlier years, he was an avid bowler, golfer, Little League, CYO, basketball and soccer coach and earned his pilot's license.A communicant of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church in Martinsville, he was a former member of the Somerville Elks Lodge # and the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Hills Council #5959.He was predeceased by his loving wife, Maura E. Geary Sweeney in 2005 and his brother, Charlie Sweeney. A true friend who always helped others, he will be missed by many.Surviving are his son, Tommy Sweeney of CA; his daughters, Deirdre Ryan of Bridgewater and Maggie Bickert of PA; his brothers, John, William, Patrick, Dennis and Austin Sweeney and his grandchildren, Kieran, Alanah, Brianna, Colin, Melanie, Megan, Aislinn and Hannah.Funeral services will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
