Dear Murphy Family,
I am so sorry to have read about the passing of your lovely wife, mother and grandmother. You do not know me but I would like to tell you that I had the honor of being one of Mrs. Murphy's 6th grade students at East End School in North Plainfield. I had formerly attended parochial so it was a bit of a change for me. Mrs. Murphy was the kindest and sweetest teacher I had! A far cry for the nuns... She made the transion easier for me! I remember she organized an end of school year picnic and that was to be my last time seeing her. I exchanged some letters with her for awhile. I would think of her and always with a smile on her face and in her heart. I always thought she was so pretty with her strawberry blonde hair. She was beautiful insight and out.
With sincere sympathy,
Nancy (nee Cunningham) Kinsey

When I brought my youngest daughter Tara home from the hospital after she was born, Joan and Jill were in front of their home ( across the street from our home in Free Acres)with a sign and a chant: " Baby, baby; welcome home, Baby!"
I taught Joan to make omelets and noodle pudding and her's ended up being better than mine!
My older daughter Shannon loved the hikes in the White Mountains with our family and Joan's!
I loved eating lobster in NH with Joan because she was horrified as we sloppily cracked and picked apart our lobster as she neatly ate her filet mignon!

We had the best time when she vacationed in Florida with her dad so his brother Ray and he could spend time together. It was a great time. My mother was stiill alive and we all went to alhambra dinner theater and to the beach. Our thoughts add prayers are with all the Smith cousins. From all of us in Florida. Ant Joan, as a little girl I remember waiting on the dock at the island for you and the rest of the New Jersey Murphy's to make your way to the lake all the way from Berkeley Heights. It was always the highlight of my summer. I will miss your smile, warmth, caring, and love for family and will hold you in my heart always. Thank you for such fond memories...

Joan was one of the most genuine, warm-hearted people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Her love for children was apparent in everything she did. She was so kind and welcoming. I will miss her presence at our UNH homecoming celebrations where she was our biggest cheerleader! I will miss seeing her joy when she was surrounded by family. I will keep with me the lessons in patience and happiness I learned from being around her.
To her loving family, I wish you peace ~ Kristine, especially to you, my friend.

Greetings from Georgia, Kristine, Sheryl, Jill, and Mr. Murphy! You are in my thoughts and prayers as you celebrate your mom's and wife's life and contemplate the wonderful gifts and memories that she gave each you and each of us that she touched throughout her life. I loved all of the times that our families got together and fun that Mrs. Murphy added to those times. From piles of leaves in your backyard, hiking to the huts in NH, times at the lake and the great swim, haircuts, taking us to Wilson Memorial Church, dancing lessons and recitals. I had the privilege of being a fourth 'daughter' in 1985 for a short while when I had hoped to finish HS in NJ when my family moved to PA. I remember morning shower schedules expertly crafted by Mrs. Murphy, cereal contests to see who could eat the least amount of sugared cereals for the week - lucky for me I actually like Shredded Wheat, making salads for dinner... I was welcomed and included. I remember happy times at my wedding when she was among the friends of ours from NJ who traveled to GA. Mrs. Murphy will always hold a special place in my heart. Now she holds a special place in heaven, too.

I was very sad to hear about Joan today. I taught with Joan at West End School--she was one of the most dedicated teachers that I have known. Joan and Doug celebrated their 30th anniversary in Alaska in the summer of 1996--the same time my husband and I were on our honeymoon. Although we were on different cruise lines, we met up at some of the same ports. They took us out to dinner one night. It is a very special memory for me.

I have great long term memories and connections resulting from Joan's initial invitation to me to join her Monday nite bridge group some 36 years ago.
Many thoughts come to mine - sitting on floor in living room during Doug's graduation party, before multi house renovations; spread of goodies for parties to beat all spreads; her pleasure when I helped her with upholstering dining room set and making window treatment; ; her persuasion I fill in vacancy of "blue bird" in a musical Doug had joined; her "gift" with hair cutting'; her obvious love and commitment to her children, grandchildren, parents and husband; her sharing of family and travel pictures; her upbeat nature in face of her disease; and her multitasking during our bridge games.
I will miss not being able to talk and see Joan from time to time.

Joan has been such an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She was the kindest, most giving person, I have ever known. I have prayed for her in her struggle to overcome this illness. Even with all she endured, she was always smiling. May God take her into the bosom of his arms and welcome her into his house. I will miss her very much and I share this loss with each of you. She will always be a cherished memory by friends and family.

Mom,
Where do I start? You were the most amazing Mom and Grammy that there possibly could have been. You will ALWAYS be here with me and all our family. I am so sorry that you had to leave us too soon. I know that you were not ready and neither were we. But you tried so hard to stay with us. You were strong beyond belief and we all are amazingly thankful for every minute we got to spend with you here. Please watch over me and guide me through the rough times and smile with me during all the fun times. Your daughter always, Kristine

Joan was one of the kindest and most loving women I've ever known. She was always positive and always genuine. Joan loved children, which was evident in her teaching. She was a great mentor to me in my first year as a teacher and was the only one who was always there as late as me! It loved knowing that she was down the hall making everything 'perfect'. I would take breaks and just sit and chat with her about whatever came up. We would always joke about who was gonna close up shop. She was the first in school I told when I found out I was pregnant with my first child and she was so happy it made us both cry. She told me that there's no better course in life than that of becoming and being a mother. I always envied her relationship with her daughters. They had such an incredible mom who loved them endlessly. I wanted to adopt her for myself. I asked her how I can have as great a relationship with my own girls and she told me to simply love them and laugh with them. Joan adored her grandchildren and never gave up a moment to share the joy that they brought her. I loved the fact that when Kristine was in Ireland, she simply went to visit without a second thought - despite the distance. The thing about Joan I loved most was how she always told me that she loved the fact that we were such good friends despite our age difference. I'll always appreciated that about her. She was genuine! Although we weren't in close touch recently, I will miss her very much. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you - Doug, Kristine, Sheryl, and Jill.
With love,
Karen McKenna

My Cousin, my friend.
So many years have passed since we were little girls playing at the shore in Lavallette. So many years of memories. There are not many people in this world who have loved as deeply as Joanie did, who lived life as bravely, who lived life with such a positive outlook and such great expectations. Doug, her girls and her grands were so important to her as well as her relatives and friends. She always had time for all of us. Such a dear heart. I loved her and will miss her. She fought well. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless.
Diny
