Obituary of Louis P. Mandell

Louis P. Mandell, 91, of Martinsville, NJ died September 11, 2009. Born in Bellows Falls, VT, he had lived in Plainfield, NJ for many years and then in Martinsville, NJ for the past 36 years. He was a 1936 graduate of Plainfield High School, where he received varsity letters in swimming and football. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Civil Engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and did extensive graduate work at the University of Colorado at Denver. He served in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant doing intelligence work during World War II. He worked for the federal government for 33 years, most notably as the Chief of Structural Design of the New York District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also worked as the Resident Construction Engineer of a 39-mile segment of the Bridgewater Township sewer system and then did consulting work. He was a Life Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering. He was a member of Temple Beth-El, Plainfield, NJ and its Men's Club for more than 25 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marcia Mandell (nee Friedman), his children, Erica Mandell and Barry Mandell, his sister, Ruth Treffinger, 17 adoring nieces and nephews, 28 grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and many good friends.
