Obituary of Delmer Gideon Olds

Delmer Gideon Olds, age 82, died on Sunday November 15, 2009, at his home in Somerset. Delmer was born in Barbour County, AL to the late Harvey and Lena Cutchen Olds on January 5,1927. He graduated from Georgetown High School and LaSalle Extension University. He served in World War II aboard LST 1049 in the Pacific Arena. He was employed by the Hunt Wesson Foods in 1952 and retired in 1985 as Northeast Industrial Sales Manager. He married his childhood sweetheart Mary Frances Olds in 1945. Delmer was a Southern Baptist serving in positions of the Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist Convention of New York, Metropolitan New York Baptist Association, churches in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and New Jersey. He was a deacon, trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Training Union Director and served on many committees. He and his wife are Charter Members of the Terrill Road Baptist Church serving there for 42 years. Delmer is survived by his wife Mary Frances (Humber) Olds, his two daughters, Rulene DiFrancesco (Mauro) of Warren, Andrea Checchio (Ben) of Hackettstown, two grandchildren, Rebecca Muscaro (Tony) and Rachel Checchio, one great-granddaughter, Grace Muscaro. Also, one sister, Luvelia Smith and a brother, Delano Olds (Sara). The visitation will be held on Thursday November 19, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung. Entombment will be private. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday November 21st at 11:00 am at the Terrill Road Baptist Church, 1340 Terrill Road, Scotch Plains (908-322-7151). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Terrill Road Baptist Church, 1340 Terrill Road, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076 or to the Somerset Hills Baptist Church, 510 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.
