Obituary of Iain Blair Murray

IAIN BLAIR MURRAY, 86, of Plainfield, died Sunday at home. Mr. Murray was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 5, 1923, the son of Angus Robertson Murray and Mary Russell Martin. Mr. Murray trained as a marine engineer at the Royal Technical College and apprenticed at Weir Shipyard in Glasgow, for whom he designed and built boiler systems for naval warships. Mr. Murray emigrated to Peru in 1947, where he lived for nearly twenty years and was employed as a plant engineer for the sugar haciendas of W.R. Grace. Upon his arrival in the U.S. he worked for GAF Corporation and retired in 1982. Mr. Murray volunteered for service in the Royal Navy during World War II, but was decreed a member of a "reserved occupation." He served in the Home Guard from 1941-44. In Peru, he was an active member of the St. Andrew's Society and the Lima Cricket Club. Mr. Murray is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Eleanor Higgins Murray of Plainfield, and a daughter, Gillian, of Summit.
