Obituary of Lucille H. Gaither
Flossie Lucille Hill Gaither entered into eternal peace on January 13, 2010 in her home after a long fight with Alzheimer's. Born May 20, 1915 in Greensboro, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Lemuel and Dorinda Hill. However, Lucille, as she was lovingly called by her family and friends, was raised by her paternal aunt, Atmore Ervin in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Educated in Rock Hill, Lucille earned her Associates Degree from Friendship College in Rock Hill. She was a certified music teacher and taught school until she married in 1940 to David Washington Gaither. She and David left Rock Hill and moved to Baltimore, Maryland and then to Plainfield, NJ. In 1947 they purchased their home on South Second Street where she lived for 63 memorable years. Mrs. Gaither was a foster to mother to dozens of children and was known as "Mama Gaither" in the community. She also worked as a Nurse's Aide for Ashbrook Nursing Home. In the 1970's she started working for Rutgers University as a custodian and retired from there in the 90's as Maintenance Supervisor. She was a member of the Church of God in Plainfield where she committed to the service of God. Lucille served on the Usher Board, as a Sunday school teacher, a musician, and the Superintendent of the Sunday school.
She was predeceased by her husband, David W. Gaither and her daughter Doris "Davida" Gaither. She leaves to celebrate her life her daughter, Patricia A. Ross of Westfield, NJ; Dewey T. Gaither (Victoria) of Columbia, SC; Waverly H., Gary W. and Roger E. Gaither of Plainfield, NJ. She also will be remembered by nine grandchildren, Adele, Rindimo, Dewey, Tyrone, David, Sean and Vaughn Gaither along with 2 granddaughters, Leisha Hairston and Tisa Gaither. She also leaves a host of great-grand children, relatives and friends.
The wake will be held on Saturday from 9-11am, on January 23, 2010 at Rose of Sharon Community Church, 825 West Seventh Street, Plainfield, NJ with the funeral held following the wake. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Iselin, NJ. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction on Higgins Home For Funerals, Plainfield
