Obituary of Henry A. Hassel

Henry "Hank" A. Hassel Martinsville and Townsends Inlet, NJ: Henry "Hank" A. Hassel, 81, returned to our Lord on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. Born in Olney, PA, to Carl W. and Catherine Horn Hassel, Hank lived most of his life in New Jersey. Hank graduated from Trenton State Teacher's College in 1950, and went on to receive a Master's in Fine Arts at Columbia University. He also earned certification as an education coordinator from Rutgers University. Hank served his country as a First Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry during the Korean Conflict, after which his life of service to others continued as a teacher. Starting out in Metuchen, then Irvington, Hank worked primarily for the Union County Regional School District as a Cooperative Education Coordinator until he retired in 1993. In addition, from 1961-1963, Hank and his wife, Adrienne, taught at Igbaja Teacher Training College, Nigeria, West Africa, through Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) and the Nigerian Department of Education. As a longtime member of Hydewood Park Baptist Church in North Plainfield, Hank enjoyed singing in the choir and working as a leader in the Boy's Brigade. In retirement, Hank loved working with plants and tinkering with home projects. He also enjoyed fishing as a member of the Townsend's Inlet Yacht Club, where he and Adrienne have a home. His brother, Dr. C. Walter Hassel predeceased him in March of this year. Surviving are his wife, Adrienne Harrison Hassel; two daughters, Susan Wood of Dreyden, NY and Linda Hassel of Martinsville, and a granddaughter, Sarah Wood of Dreyden, NY. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel at Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ. Visitation will be held on Monday morning from 9:00 - 11:00 am at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung.
