Obituary of Rheta Russell Howland

Rheta Russell Howland, age 91, died on Monday, July 22, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She was born in Hawaii, lived in Europe, Boston, Gloucester and most recently NJ. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Antioch College in Ohio and earned her Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Harvard and Boston Universities. She moved to Paris to pursue her Doctorate from the Sorbonne University, while traveling and living in Europe for 12 years. She also served in the United States Army in their ROTC program. Miss Howland taught Special Education in the Boston Public School system for many years. She enjoyed her art painting, gardening, traveling the world, and taking care of animals everywhere she went. All who met her loved "Aunt Rheta" for her endearing, kind, generous spirit, and her unique independence and zest for life. She is survived by her sister, Anne Knudson of Watchung, NJ; her niece, Anne Knudson-Fitzpatrick of Evergreen, Colorado; her nephew, Erik Knudson of Tahoe City, California; her great nephew, Ryan Fitzpatrick of Boulder, Colorado; and her great niece, Tess Fitzpatrick who attends The University of Colorado School of Medicine. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 26th at 10:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., in Watchung. Cremation was private.
