Obituary of Grace A. Lucy

Grace A. Lucy, 99, died on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at her home in Basking Ridge. She was born in Newark and had lived in Maplewood and Springfield before moving to Basking Ridge. At age 78 years of age, she heard of an effort by Delbarton School in Morristown to collect clothing for families in Appalachia. In a period of six years, at the age of 84, she accumulated over one million dollars worth of clothing to this project. For this effort, she was awarded a community humanitarian award by the Maplewood Township on January 1, 1995. The Committee has traditionally presented the award at the meeting to recognize outstanding achievements of local residents. She also received awards from two counties, two state governors and three personal commendations from the White House. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in East Orange. Mrs. Lucy is predeceased by her daughter, Jane Marie and her brothers, Arthur and Frank Cummings. She is survived by her sons, John F. and his wife, Lucille of Basking Ridge, Donald M. of Fort Pierce, FL, Richard J. of Plainsboro, NJ and her daughter, Kathleen A. of Basking Ridge. Mrs. Lucy is also survived by the family of Tracey and Bob Elsman. Also surviving are grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will begin on Monday, November 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral mass at St. James Church in Basking Ridge. Interment will be at Holy Seplechre Cemetery in East Orange. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her loving memory to World Hunger.
