Obituary of Alfred E. Hirsch, Jr.
Alfred E. Hirsch, Jr., age 84, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Arden Court in Whippany. Born in St. Louis, Missouri he has resided in Warren for many years.
Alfred served in the Navy during World War II. He was a Patent Attorney and worked as Assistant General Council for thirty-six years at AT&T Bell Laboratories. He was a graduate of Rutgers, Columbia and NYU with a LLM degree, he also attended Cornell University and graduated with a BEE/MEE degree; he received his JD from NYU.
He was President of PIPA (Pacific Industrial Property Association) Joint US- Japanese Patent Society. He served on the Board of Directors of Summit Chapter of American Red Cross and was very civic minded as the former Director of Communications - Summit Civil Defense and member of the Summit Zoning Board. In his spare time he was a ham operator and opera enthusiast.
Alfred was a member of the Summit Old Guard, joining right after his retirement from Bell Labs in 1992. His contributions were well recognized with a Life Membership Award in 2004. Al became the Director in 1995, after serving as Vice Director in 1994. In addition he served as Chairman of the Timely Topic, Trip and Theater and a member of the Program and Ladies Day Committees and Council Member at Large.
Predeceased by his wife Martha Hirsch in 2006.
Surviving are his two brothers-in-law David and John Southern; two nephews and nieces; and cousins David Manning, Alma Neisler and David Conway.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, February 9th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm with a 7:30 pm Funeral Service. Cremation will be private.
