Obituary of Sr. Mary Phyllis Breimayer, RSM

Sister Mary Phyllis Breimayer, Sister of Mercy Sister Mary Phyllis, 80, died peacefully on April 30, 2011 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ. Sister Mary Phyllis, the former Madalen Breimayer, is the third of four daughters of Philip and Mary Breimayer of Trenton, NJ. She completed her early education in Trenton, NJ and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1949. Sister taught primary and intermediate grades at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Milltown, NJ and on the secondary level at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung. As a member of the Sisters of Mercy she continued her education at Georgian Court College, Lakewood, NJ where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then studied at Catholic University in DC in preparation for her assignment to Costa Rica in 1964. Following this study Sister went to the Center for Intercultural Formation in Cuernavaca, Mexico for an intensive course in Spanish and Latin American culture. While in Costa Rica she taught adults in San Vito de Java, Ipis and Sabinilla. In 1970 she completed her studies at New York University and received a Master of Arts degree in Art Education. Sister was then assigned to Georgina Court as Assistant Professor of Art. In 1981 she was elected as a General Councilor of the Sisters of Mercy for four years. She returned to Georgian Court and continued studies at New York University and received a Doctor of Philosophy Degree at the Steinhardt School of Education in 2004. Sister continued as Chair of the Art Department until her recent illness. She is survived by two sisters, Julia Szucsik and Marie Boros both of Florida, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community. She was also predeceased by her sister Kathryn Lewell. Visitation will take place at Immaculate Conception Chapel, Mount Saint Mary in Watchung, NJ on Wednesday May 4, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Thursday May 5, 2011 from 9:00 to 10:30 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Burial in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.
