Obituary of Anthony Bebbino

Anthony M. Bebbino, MD, age 88, of Berkeley Heights, NJ, passed away Wednesday, August 10, at Overlook Hospital, Summit NJ. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Frank and Francis (Cibulski) Bebbino, he was was preceded in death by his siblings--two brothers, Frank and John, both of Long Island, NY. Dr. Bebbino was raised in Maspeth, NY, until the time he enlisted in the Air Force, receiving his medical training in Indiana. Upon completing his medical internship at Jamaica Hospital, NY, he moved to Berkeley Heights in 1949 with his wife, Jean, daughter Lynne and son Marc and began his medical practice. Dr. Bebbino was subsequently drafted in 1952 back to the Air Force and was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base in New York State. He lived there with Jean and their two children. He was an Air Force Captain and served in the Physician's Services wing. After his service, he moved his family back to Berkeley Heights and resumed his practice. His family continued to grow with the addition of 4 more children. Dr. Bebbino served as Head of Family Practice at Overlook Hospital. He was the Police and School physician for the town of Berkeley Heights. He retired from private practice after 50 years in1999. Dr. Bebbino was the first medical doctor in Berkeley Heights and, in his practice's early years, many patients paid him for his services with eggs, bread and vegetables. He was one of the last physicians to perform house calls. Dr. Bebbino loved his family and enjoyed his earlier vacations in Sound Beach, NY, with his children and extended families as well as his latter vacations spent on the seas, cruising with his family on his yacht "Hope" to many various locations along the east coast with fellow boaters. He served as President of the Watchung Power Squadren for many years. He also enjoyed golf, obtaining his one and only "hole in one" at the age of 81! Dr. Bebbino is predeceased by his first wife, Jean (Scarpati) Bebbino, as well as his daughter- in- law, Terry (Dreesen) Bebbino (wife of Marc) and his son, Alan Bebbino. Surviving Dr. Bebbino are his beloved companion of many years, Mary Estenes of Berkeley Heights: his five children: daughter Lynne and her husband, Anthony Mortaruolo, Warren, NJ; son Marc Bebbino, High Bridge, NJ; daughter Dale Bebbino, GA; son Anthony Bebbino, Toms River, NJ; daughter Allison and her husband, Bill Morgan, Camp Hill, PA; as well as his daughter-in-law, Glenda (Santa Maria) Bebbino, widow of Alan. Dr. Bebbino also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Amy (Mortaruolo) Pope; Jennifer (Bebbino) Larsen; Michael Mortaruolo; Jeff Bebbino; Kathleen (Mortaruolo) Urban; Karen (Bebbino) Thorne; Amanda Morgan, as well as 6 great-grandchildren: Dakota & Derek Pope; Dominick & Sophia Larsen, Madelyn & Lena Urban.
