Obituary of Sr. Mary Lavin
Sister Mary Lavin (former) Sister Mary Scholastica), Sister of Mercy Sister Mary Lavin, 79, died peacefully on November 1, 2011 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ.
Sister was born in Philadelphia and raised in Atlantic City, NJ. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1950 and received a BA degree in English from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, NJ and an MA degree in Guidance from University of Dayton in Ohio. She taught in St. Mary Academy, Lakewood; St. Mary School, South Amboy and Our Lady of the Victories School, Sayreville. She served as Principal at St. Mary School, Alpha; Center City Catholic School, Camden; St. Nicholas School, Atlantic City and Our Lady of Victories School, Sayreville. She was Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor at Sacred Heart School, South Plainfield; St. Mary Academy, Lakewood and St. Dominic School, Brick, NJ. She also ministered at St. Brendan School, Ormond Beach, FL and St. Francis deSales School, Salisbury, MD.
Sister Mary was a dedicated teacher and Counselor. She loved her students and was revered by all who knew her. She is predeceased by her parents Patrick and Mary Lavin and her brothers Patrick, John, James, Joseph and Michael Lavin. She is survived by her brother Tom Lavin of Palm Coast, FL; her sisters-in-law Rita Lavin, of Port Orange, FL; Mary Claire Lavin of PA and Kathy Pettineo of NJ.
At an early age Sister Mary lost her parents and was raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Delia and James Elliott along with their children. She is survived by Mildred Elliott, Robert Hartmann and Trish Elliott. She is also survived by many cousins including some from Ireland, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews, many Sisters of Mercy and friends.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center on Friday, November 4, 2011 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a wake at D'Elia Funeral Home in Lakewood, NJ from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a Prayer Service at the Funeral Home at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011 visiting at the Funeral Home from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Dominic's Church, Brick, NJ. Burial in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made to McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ 07069.
