Obituary of John Alexander Johnson, Jr.

John Alexander Johnson, Jr., age 78, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. John was a Christmas baby born on Christmas day in 1932, to the late John Alexander Johnson Sr. and Mary Odessa Layne Johnson and was raised in Atlantic City, NJ. John spent his life in Illinois and many parts of Northern New Jersey before finally settling down in Plainfield. John's early education was at The Westside and Indiana Ave. School, in Atlantic City. He graduated from The Atlantic City Boy's Vocational School as an auto mechanic. He was a former member of the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Atlantic City where he spent his childhood along with being a member of the Boy Scouts. John worked at Kravitz Clothing Factory, served as a valet at several hotels and with his father in his truck hauling business where he learned to drive at an early age. As a United States Air Force veteran, John served during the Korean War and was given an honorable discharge for his service. He then moved to New Brunswick, NJ and began employment with Engelhard Industries where he worked for many years. John concluded his blue collar career in 1995 when he retired after being a boiler operator for United States Gypsum in Clark, NJ. He had a love for dogs, fast cars that moved like lightning, and his family. He loved spending time with his family and especially cherished every moment he had with his grandchild, John Alexander Johnson the 4th. He is predeceased by his parents John and Mary Johnson, brothers Arnold & Cecil Johnson and a sister Celestine Walker. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 39 years, Annie Ree Scott Johnson; his sons, Tyrone Johnson and John Johnson III and his wife, Kwanza; one brother-Clarence of Atlantic City, NJ; four sisters-Frances King of Pleasantville, NJ, Esther Stewart of Scotch Plains, NJ, Marie Lawrence of Sicklerville, NJ and Blanche Mackey of Las Vegas, NV, one grandson, John Alexander Johnson the 4th; sister in laws, brothers in laws, nieces, nephews, a host of relatives in the Bahamas and Barbados and other family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 14th at 1:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West 8th Street, Plainfield followed by a private cremation.
