Sister Catherine (Kate) Nugent, Sister of Mercy
Sister Kate, 68 died on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at
McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ after a long illness.
Sister Kate was born in Orange, NJ and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1961.
She earned a BA degree in Elementary Education from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, NJ and an MA degree in Counseling and Guidance from Kean College.
She spent most of her religious life in the Trenton and Metuchen Diocese in NJ.
Sister Catherine's life was dedicated to hope and healing in the various ministries in which she engaged - teaching, educational guidance, religious formation of postulants and novices, spiritual direction, director of volunteer services at Calcutta House in Philadelphia, and pastoral ministry on the local and diocesan levels.
Sister Kate's last years were very difficult ones for her, for her family and especially for the Sisters of Mercy who walked with her for so many years. Alzheimer's took control of her at age 50 and continued to do its damage until her death. Kate will always be remembered as a beautiful, gentle, and compassionate woman dedicated to her family, church, religious community as well as to the poor and marginalized.
She is survived by her sister Roseleen Caselli of Griswold, CT, her brother Michael Nugent of South River, NJ, her many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, the Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community and caring friends, all of whom loved and supported her during her illness.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center 1633 Highway 22 Watchung, NJ on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Wake from 9:00 to 11:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.
