Part of the reward and joy of going home was getting to see Jean.
I can only hope to embrace life with as much respect and humor as Jean did.

I can't even imagine Jean no longer being a part of our celebrations, parties, or just plain get togethers. Her wonderful spirit, awesome shortbread, generosity and sense of fun and neighborliness have been a part of almost my whole life. I still miss her parents, the Gardiners, and still miss Bill popping over and participating in our water battles. I am so glad that Jean and her family were a part of the fabric of our lives and they will continue to be so even if not in a physical sense.

Always a gracious lady. Even though we would only see Jean once or twice a year at a neighborhood social gathering, it was always fun to take a trip down memory lane with her and talk about what North Plainfield used to be like. Deepest condolences to the Erber family. Godspeed Jean.

Jean Erber was for me an example of a truly good person. She was kind, discrete, wise, deeply sensitive, stubborn, generous, and courageous. She was a pleasure to be around—quick to laugh, insightful, curious, independent minded, and never mean spirited. She was a committed Christian who never judged others or made them uncomfortable because they didn’t share her views. To be this way takes work, and her presence always reminded me that it was worth it. All you had to do was talk with her a little to get the sense of her richness, things you wouldn’t imagine that she had thought about or done or lived through. I remember in particular her friendship with Bill Evans, the jazz great, a classmate in high school who signed the yearbook she showed me. I remember her stories, little things, big things, which always were full of her enjoyment of life. Regardless of her many difficulties, especially in her last years, she was always admirable. I will miss her.

Jean, we are so sad to lose you. From being witness at our wedding to keeping us supplied with rhubarb, you were the best neighbor anyone could imagine for almost 20 years. We grieved, laughed, celebrated, gardened, survived Sandy, and ate together, but as I think of you now I am focusing on that laughter and your hilarious stories of the antics of your youth and early motherhood. Thank you for sharing so much love and so many quiet acts of kindness with so many people. You modeled how we should live and our neighborhood is darker without you.

It is a blessing that my Aunt Jean s in the arms of Our Lord and out of any discomfort. She was and is one of the strongest and kindest people I have ever known and I am very lucky to have had her in my life and a part of my family. My children loved her dearly and loved spending time at her house. My husband and I loved to hear the family stories and look at the pictures she had from a long time ago. She instilled that same sense of family in me. She will be missed.

Jean,
I was only your daughter -in- law for 3 short years, but in that time you made a wonderful impression on me. I admired your strength and intelligence, and your interest in history and family.
Even, when you weren't feeling well, you wouldn't complain. A very tough lady, but a beautiful lady, who never stopped caring for herself with pride and dignity.
I hope to aspire to the same. Thanks for the good times and talks we had.
So happy you are with our Lord now!
I will miss you.
Laura Erber
