I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family on the loss of your loved one. May God almighty, father of tender mercies and all comfort continue to strengthen you all (2 Corinthians 1:3,4). How eager we all are to see the fulfillment of Gods promise to completely remove death, tears, mourning, outcry and pain (Revelation 21:4). The Bible also provides assurance of the resurrection hope for our dead loved ones (John 5:25). May these promises from God bring you comfort. You can learn more about Gods purposes at www.jw.org

I feel compelled by strong friendship to come before you this morning to speak about one of the most unselfish persons I have had the privilege to call a colleague and friend.
As fellow cancer survivors Carole and I met while attending gynecologic cancer support groups.
When you are in a support group the women share their deepest and, sometimes, troubling thoughts and concerns.
As Carole and I spent more time together in groups we also became close friends. There was a mutual love between us for who we were as individuals and for what we could do together.
Both Carole and I participated in other survivorship teaching programs. We often traveled to UMDNJ, Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center and other venues to share our stories about our diagnoses and survivorship to enlighten doctors, medical students, nursing students and pastoral care students about this disease.
One dual effort of ours will remain in my mind and heart.
At one point the Cancer Support Community –Central New Jersey cancelled the gynecologic cancer support group for lack of participants. So we began an all-out effort to bring the support group back.
We spoke to the Executive Director. We manned the phones to call women to make them aware of the support group.
Well, as a result of our efforts, the support group was reborn.
At our last meeting there were 9 survivors sitting in the living room.
I wish there were no women at the support group, meaning no one dealing with a cancer, but I know that is wishful thinking.
On a visit with Carole at the Center for Hope, while holding her hands, I recalled for her our efforts to bring back the group.
When I had completed my story and told her of the 9 women in the living room, I looked at her face and saw a faint smile.
Carole knew that through her efforts she had a positive effect on the lives of others.
Carole’s concern for others was the driving force to become involved in Kaleidoscope of Hope.
I came to realize the depth of Carole’s commitment to the cause by seeing how many hours she spent doing Kaleidoscope volunteer work to the point of nearly making it a full time job.
Carole took advantage of every opportunity to broaden, build and expand Kaleidoscope’s reach into the community and into the research field.
She sincerely wanted Kaleidoscope of Hope to make a difference to women dealing with ovarian cancer. We want our funded research to develop enhanced screening protocols and an eventual cure for this disease.
To honor Carole’s spirit which we know will always be with us, let us move forward to continue her efforts to fulfill Kaleidoscope of Hope’s mission.

Carole Fagella, or Mrs. Fagella as I continue to call her even in my adulthood, was my tutor for several years as a child. She made me tolerate mathematics and worked tirelessly to make sure I understood concepts. She additionally taught me in other subjects, and her severe passion in education had a helping hand in helping me decide that I too wanted to be an professional educator.
As I grew up, Mrs. Fagella resigned from being my tutor but she continued to be part of my life. I babysat her son, Alex, and I continued to tell her of my adventures as I learned of hers. She was a true advocate for my professional and personal life, and whenever I visited, she would always serve me Diet Snapple Peach Tea.
Mrs. Fagella was a true role model, a source of inspiration, and one of a kind. She was extremely friendly, kind, and warm hearted. She always looked out for me and wished me the best in my endeavors. She was one of a kind and she was a fighter, a characteristic that she showed the most as her life took a drastic turn. She was a wonderful person with a beautiful soul. It goes without saying that she will be missed. The world lost a great person when she left it.

We pray that the many happy memories of Carole’s life with all of you will, with time, overcome the sadness and pain that have accompanied you all as you journeyed these later years with her.
Yes, she did a lot in the community, but I particularly remember her dedication to Alex and Bob. The twinkle in her eye when she talked of them.
She worked tirelessly to promote her cause and was a good friend. I will always remember her sharing her experience, strength, hope and laughter as she faced her life and our boys progressed through Pingry.
Please be assured of our prayers. The obituary was lovely, thanks so much for sharing her with us again. Such a multidimensional woman. She will be missed.

Carole was like a big sister to me. I could talk to her about anything, and she was enormously wise and humorous. No problem seemed too big to overcome once Carole put her comedic spin on it. She was an abundance of creative energy, and I think of her when I see my Natalie engaged in her art with the same enthusiasm. All of the family stories were best articulated through Carole. I will miss her smile and her ability to bring a room together with her undeniable magnetism. I know she will be remembered that way.

My father (Carole’s Uncle Artie) used to have a saying: “There’s nothing better than a dead Italian.” While it sounds terrible it was meant to be somewhat humorous. He explained that in his Italian neighborhood no matter who passed away “They were wonderful!” People who were not exactly revered seemed to become saints upon passing.
In Carole’s case I can honestly say there is nothing I will write here about her that I haven’t said many times before.
Carole was one of a kind. A special person who meant so much to so many. She spent her life caring for others like few others I have ever known. Here are just a few examples:
- When I was young she helped me and my siblings when our mother battled cancer. She was only 18 and she would take us out to eat, talk to us for hours and give us support that I will never forget.
- After my mother passed she continued to be there for us. She became the sister that my sister didn’t have. What a wonderful relationship they had.
- She helped take care of my father (her Uncle Artie) for many years.
- She took care of her mother for years. She took care of her mother for years including the years her mother battled cancer.
- When our Aunt Helen lost her husband, Carole was there and she ended up being Helen’s primary care giver for 14 years. She visited her virtually every day, even when she was sick with cancer and going through chemo therapy.
- She talked to our cousin almost every day when he had cancer despite going through the same. She insisted she could provide him guidance and support.
- She volunteered many, many hours to help the ovarian cancer cause.
She once told me her husband Bob (whom she adored) was the best Christian she knew. Not because of his religious affiliation or participation but because of the way he lived his life. This is the exact way I think of Carole. She put the needs of others before hers. So many people leaned on her throughout the years and her shoulders always carried the load.
She believed in family and friends and would be there for anyone of them who needed a helping hand.
She adored her husband Bob and son Alex. Carole and I would frequently go out to lunch and whenever Bob or Alex would call, her face would light up. The way she battled her disease was amazing and so much of her fight was because of the love she had for them.
Add to all this a brilliant sense of humor and an intelligence rivaled by few and you see why I always praised her and spoke so highly of her.
I would say “Rest in peace cuz”, but I know resting is not one of your joys. So instead I say “Don’t let the afterlife slow you down cuz, I love you dearly”.
Your cuz,
Paul

I want to share an email I sent to Carole's fellow Patient Educators from the Pathways Women's Cancer Teaching Project. We all loved her.
Dear Patient Educators,
I am heartbroken to tell you that Carole Fagella passed away on February 7th on her 60th birthday. There will be a wake this Friday and a funeral on Saturday. Here is a link with the information. http://higginsfuneralhome.com/tribute/details/2833/Carole-Fagella/obituary.html#tribute-start
She was one of the most inspirational speakers I have had the privilege to hear. We were so blessed to have her as a Patient Educator with the Pathways Women's Cancer Teaching Project. I admired and loved her and know that those of you who knew her did as well.
Carole's legacy lives on in so many ways. Last winter, Carole was interviewed for 2 hours (miraculously, without getting fatigued) by Rutgers NJ Medical school students and by Dr. Dorian Wilson, head of the Healthcare Foundation for Humanism in Medicine at Rutgers NJ Medical School. The session was recorded and will be used to teach many existing and future medical school students about life with cancer. I also have a copy in my office and gave Carole a copy.
The world is such a better place because she was in it, sharing her beautiful spirit, strength, humor and words of wisdom. I will miss her so much.
Warm hugs,
Lesley

Our hearts are heavy, with the loss of our beloved Carole. She was a ball of energy and life that could bring excitement, laughter and dance to any situation. She was a warrior. She had an admirable amount of strength that blessed us all with 8.5 more years of life since her first diagnosis. She was not a quitter. What we can take away from her extraordinary life is that joy, humor, and sarcasm can make any moment better, and that we all have the potential of her type of strength within us.
We will miss our - Sister - Sister in love - Aunt - Great Aunt - Friend - Confidant - Mentor. We will love you always and will never forget your beautiful spirit.

Dear Bob and Alex,
I can't begin to tell you how much I already miss Carole. Knowing that she was just a phone call away was so comforting. She was my best friend. I coud tell her anything and everything (and I did). While we did not get together that often, speaking mainly by phone, sometimes twice a week, her friendship, advice, wisdom and humor made my world so much brighter. Carole made the entire WORLD a better place, and I am so grateful to have know her. Intellectually, I understand that she is out of pain, but my heart is having a harder time dealing with her passing. I feel so badly for both of you. I know how much she worried about leaving, but she took solace in realizing that all this would make Alex a stronger and more mature young man. She was so proud of Alex and grateful to have such a wonderful, caring, devoted husband. I am so glad for the time I had with her and will cherish every moment forever. I'll be down on Friday.
With heart-felt sympathy,
Charlene
