Obituary of Margaret McCarthy
Margaret McCarthy, age 98, died on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born and raised in New York City and had resided in North Plainfield since 1980.
Margaret married John McCarthy in New York New York on October 24, 1937 and together they raise their four children; Catherine, Peggy, Pat and John.
Mrs. McCarthy worked nights for the Norcross card company so she could be with her children during the day while John worked days and took care of the children's nightly needs.
Mrs. McCarthy took a job with Blue Cross/Blue Shield when the children were older, where she remained for 25 years. She retired in 1980 and moved to North Plainfield.
Mrs. McCarthy was member and regularly attended at St. Joseph's Church in North Plainfield. Margaret had worked for the board of elections all her years in North Plainfield, having served in the capacity in New York before coming to North Plainfield. She is a member of the friends of Vermeule Mansion, the North Plainfield Democratic Club and the Democratic Municipal Committee.
On December 20, 2007 Margaret was honored for her 90th birthday and for her continuing interest in being an active part and contributing member of North Plainfield community. On May 15, 2008 the Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women honored Margaret with the 7th Annual Eleanor Roosevelt distinguished service award.
Mrs. McCarthy was in avid New York Yankee fan and she also enjoyed crocheting. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. McCarthy is predeceased by her husband John McCarthy in 1976 and her siblings John Sheldon, Anna McCrossen, Lillian Hradil, Mary Rankin, Eugene Sheldon, and Patricia Crowe.
She is survived by her four children Catherine Ricci; Peggy Meyer and her husband James; Patricia Hall and her husband Raymond; and John McCarthy. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren James Meyer, Robert Meyer Michele Smego, Christine Baumann, Raymond Hall, Emily Perry, Mario, Anthony, Philip and Phyllis Ann; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren and her two siblings Joseph Sheldon and Rosemarie Fisher.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 18 from 4 to 8 PM at Higgins home for funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. A Mass of the resurrection will be held on Tuesday, July 18 at 11 AM at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield. Cremation will be private.
