Obituary of Emma Elizabeth Mayers

Our beloved mother Emma Elizabeth Mayers, succumbed to her battle with cancer on September 12th 2017 surrounded by her loving family, at her daughter's home in Clarksburg NJ. A viewing will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 9:00am to 10:00am at Higgins Funeral Home 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ, followed by a funeral service at 10:00am. The Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery located at 1401 Woodland Avenue, Scotch Plains NJ. Emma Elizabeth Mayers married Arnold Cecil Mayers in 1971. To this union was born 4 children. Emma was living in Brooklyn NY when she met her future husband Arnold, that would walk through snow storms with flowers in hand to come see her. At the time, Miss Emma wanted to concentrate on her career instead of dating. Her soon to be husband, Arnold, said that she need not be concerned with that because she would be his wife within one year. The couple married the following year on June 12, 1971 at St. Bartholomew's Church in Brooklyn NY. Arnold proclaimed, from that day moving forward, she would never have to work another day in her life! Emma was a dedicated mother to all of her children, she gave 100 percent of herself to their schooling and PTA Meetings in Plainfield. As a devoted mother, she wanted to insure the best start for her children's education. Emma was known for making sweet potato pie and potato salad. The whole neighborhood would smell her pies and come over to taste her creations. Emma and Arnold's door was always open for all the children in the neighborhood. Emma was also a self-trained dancer, who's nick name was "Legs" at the neighborhood parties in the 60's. She was also a true creator, who loved to draw, write songs, and create poetry. Lady Emma was a true connoisseur of doll collecting. She would spend hours and weeks before making her purchases to grow her doll collections. Very few neighborhoods where lucky enough to see her 200 plus doll collection she spent years acquiring. Most importantly Ms. Emma was known for her ability to tell stories. She would grab anyone's attention, as there was no subject she could not talk about. She was a well-informed, cultivated, and a well-grounded woman. Ms. Emma Elizabeth Mayers had an everlasting loving and devoted presence for her family. Her husband Arnold Cecil Mayers, son Arnold C. Mayers Jr. and two brothers John Sears and Bruce Jeffries all proceeded her in death. She is survived by her two sons; Andre Mayers and his wife Jessica Mayers, Anthony Mayers and his wife Portia Mayers and a daughter Anaka Toson and her son-in law Cordell Toson; grandchildren, Terrell Mayers, Desiree Mayers, Andre Mayers Jr., Tony Mayers, Arnold and Armani Mayers, Rahsaan Emory, Javaugn Mayers, Anthony Mayers, and Christina Bella Toson and great grandchild Aakiyah Keats.
