Sister Mary Denise O'Boyle Sister of Mercy
Sister Mary Denise , age 89, died peacefully on April 10, at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ. Sister Denise, baptized Rita O'Boyle in 1928, was one of five children of William and Mary O'Boyle. She was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in the Atlantic City area attending St. Peter School in Pleasantville and Holy Spirit High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy 1947 and was professed in 1952. Sister was awarded degrees in elementary education from Georgian Court College (now University) and in reading from Seton Hall University.
Her first teaching assignment was to Sts. Philip and James School in Phillipsburg, NJ where she taught for 16 years. She moved on to St. Joseph's in Keyport to teach junior high for the next 11 years and then joined the high school faculty at Red Bank Catholic High School as a remedial reading teacher. The following year Sister was named principal of St. James parish elementary school and later moved to Holy Family School in Hazlet. There she was an intermediate grade teacher and then became librarian and CCD coordinator. She completed her time in Hazlet as liturgical and mission coordinator. To every assignment and role, Sister Denise brought her gifts of warmth and welcome along with her love of children.
Sister began her years of retirement at St. James Convent in Red Bank and later moved to McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ.
Sister is survived by her sister Alice Cordova of Newark, Delaware and many loving nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy.
