Obituary of Evelyn Y. Coleman
Hackettstown –Evelyn Y. Coleman, 100, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday the seventh of June at Saint Clare's Hospital in Dover, New Jersey.
Born on March 28th, 1918 to Marietta and Edward H. Yetman, Evelyn was a long-time resident of Plainfield, New Jersey. She graduated from Plainfield High School and completed her education at Teachers College of Columbia University, receiving a Master's degree in Foreign Arts in 1938. Evelyn accepted a fellowship at graduation enabling her to begin her career teaching English in a French school (The Lycee De Jeunes Filles) in Oran, Algeria.
Evelyn subsequently taught French and Spanish at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina until she married her life-long partner, Norman G. Coleman in 1941. The union produced two children, Norman and Pamela. Evelyn, a wife, mother, and career woman then became a librarian, procuring books for the New York Public Library, where she worked until her retirement.
Evelyn loved to travel and spent a significant amount of time in Europe and North Africa. She was an active, long-standing member of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church in Plainfield, New Jersey. In her spare time, she enjoyed writing children's stories, playing the piano, and selling books online.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Coleman Brima of Hackettstown, granddaughters, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, a niece and nephew. She is predeceased by her husband, Norman G. Coleman, son, Norman B. Coleman, and brother, Edward H. Yetman Jr.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June12, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. followed by a home-going service at 5:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. in Watchung, New Jersey. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Evelyn's life. Interment is private.
