Daniel ("Dan") A. Shanok
Somerset: Dan Shanok, age 72, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. He was born in Brooklyn and later moved to Manhattan. Dan spent weekends and summer vacations during childhood at a family home in Hamden, CT. After graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, he attended the University of Connecticut and eventually graduated with a degree in psychology from Thomas Edison State College.
He met his wife, Edna Shanok, in Lewisburg, PA while working for International Paper. They moved to Warren, NJ to raise their family in 1973, when Dan became VP of Sales and Marketing for Silvatrim Corporation of America. He subsequently launched TD Sales, a firm focused on sales training, and then retired in Somerset, NJ.
Dan was an active member of the community. He was a long-time Commissioner, coach and trainer of coaches for Warren Little League and was involved in the township's Recreation Committee. Dan was honored as the Warren Man of the Year and, more recently, became an active member of the Jewish Federation in Somerset County.
Dan enjoyed traveling and used his linguistic skills during frequent trips to Israel, Mexico, Europe and Mongolia. He also rode his motorcycle across the US with one of his sons.
Dan was was a gifted musician, adept at the piano, harmonica, bass guitar and vocals. All of these talents came to bear while he was a member of the rock band NGC 4594, and he helped pen several singles such as Imagination Dead Imagine.
He is predeceased by his son, Brad Cianciola.
Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Edna Shanok; his children, Tony Cianciola and his wife, Denise, Marc Cianciola, Nate Shanok and his wife, Emily Von Kohorn, and Jessica Steigerwald-Schnall and her husband, Matthew; his grandchildren, Chris, Kyle, Kelly, Joe, Tyler, Amelia, Julia, Zack, Nora and Hank. He is also survived by his siblings, William and Judy and his daughter-in-law, Tracy.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 10 am to 12 noon at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. with a funeral service immediately following.
