Janet’s family: I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar situation and I was very helped by the hope that I found in the Bible in John 5: 28, which says, "Do not amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I am sending you a link with more information on this hope.

I remember when I was a rookie hockey dad... early morning game... tied my son's skates, made sure he was on the ice and then made my first trip upstairs in search of coffee.
Ordered a coffee and then realized I had no cash in my wallet.
Janet gave me a smile and said "pay me when I see you next time"...
The pity she showed on a dad in need of a coffee that morning made a me fan for ever. She'll be missed.

Shocked and saddened by the news of Janet's passing. Janet always treated us with such kindness and caring -- as she did with everyone. Her smile and tremendous attitude will be missed. Perhaps we are saddest for the hockey / skating families that will not have the benefit of being around Janet in the future. She really made every experience at USA better when she was around -- and that was often!. Such a nice person, truly loved by everyone. She will be missed. Rest in peace, Janet.

Janet will be missed by many of us in the local hockey community. She was always professional, kind, friendly, and extremely accommodating anytime I ever saw or talked with her. Having 2 sons involved with the arena and the Union Thunder, Janet was the face of the arena and her positive and heart warming attitude was not only seen by the parents but had a positive influence on all the young men and women she came in contact with including my sons. Janet will be missed by all.

A Treasure to our community, Janet always greeted you with a smile and welcomed each child into the rink. She was especially good to my younger boys, who knew Janet would offer them bagels and hot chocolates while I was on the ice. She made them feel at home up in the cafe and treated all the kids kindly. She made the USA Arena a special place of fond memories. Janet will be missed.

I’ve known Janet for over 20 years. She was my boss at Chimney Rock when I was 18 and then later at the liquor store in Warren. Janet was always supportive, willing to listen and help in any way she could; she really was like a mother to me. Years later we reconnected at Union when I was working and coaching there. I was so happy that she had come to that rink not only because she was a good manager to work with, but she was such a great person. Even though I was older she continued to look out for me, made sure I was fed, and that I was doing well. I moved out of the area and haven’t seen Janet in a few years. This news hit me hard, Janet really was an incredible person.

I honestly can't imagine Union Sports Arena without Janet!
Janet was a kind, thoughtful person...like a 2nd hockey Mom to the kids at the rink.
From the beginning, in 2009, when my 5 year old nephew started playing ice hockey, Janet was there...adding milk to his hot chocolate to cool it off...and giving him 3 straws so he could get bigger sips. She also took care of the parents who arrived at the rink VERY early on cold winter mornings....making fresh pots of coffee to keep us warm & awake!
Over the years, I looked forward to sitting in the cafe & chatting with Janet about our nephews. Like Dianne, when I arrived at the rink, I would always look hopefully to see if Janet's white car was there.
All the kids loved Janet. She would make sure they greeted her with a hello before ordering and that they had good manners.
My nephew Max used to say that Janet's grilled cheese sandwiches were the best because "they are made with love".
I can't imagine walking into the rink and up those stairs to the cafe for the 1st time knowing she won't be there to greet me. The rink will not be the same without her.
Love and Prayers to her family

I don’t really know where to start and how to express my thoughts and feelings I have today learning of Janet’s passing. It’s been a handful of years since I had seen or spoken to Janet as a result of “life” and the directions it pulls you with family and such. I met Janet back in 1993 ish when I was in college and our Rutgers team moved to a new home rink at Chimney Rock. Janet was the manager of the rink at the time. She hired a few of us to work in the rink part time while we were in school. It was a great time there and we all had a great relationship. Janet treated us all like her family. Janet (and her boss Charlie) also hired me to work part time at the liquor store she managed for Charlie. We became very close through that job and the rink. She used to greet me by calling me “son”. I always remember that. Being a young college kid playing hockey and studying most of my days were in a fog and Janet was always there looking out for me. She’d make sure i always had food and bought me lunch. We’d eat together and talk. She’d listen to my school, family and daily life stories. She did truly treat me like her son and I’ll always remember that. We stayed in touch and remained close for years following college. I am saddened that life’s paths distanced us and I am saddened that I didn’t get he chance to see her and thank her again for everything she’s done for me. She will always be in my heart and mind as a good amount of my fondest memories of my 20’s were because of Janet.

Janet was such a kind and warming presence for our whole family when our kids first started first skating, and later playing hockey the past 10 years. My daughter looked forward to Janet’s homemade Mac and cheese, as it turned out, more than the hockey! Janet was a geuine and caring person and will be missed tremendously.

I first met Janet in 2002. It was my first ever referee assignment at the Rock in Dunellen. She greeted me with that warm smile of hers. And pointed me in the right direction. That’s how she was. Always smiling and friendly. My son and daughter practically grew up at the Union rink. She knew my kids very well. When I told them what had happened they both were very upset. She was truly a wonderful person and her family should know how grateful we were to know her and how much she was appreciated. I send my sincerest condolences to her family. RIP Janet

I knew Janet going back to the building of Chimney Rock in 1993.
She was my boss when I was just a knucklehead college kid driving a zamboni and sharpening skates. She always treated all the young staff more like she was our older sister than our boss. She looked out for us, bought us pizza when she knew we had no money, let us skate, and most importantly, gave a number of us responsibility in the business to help us grow as people.
I hadn’t seen her for many years and was happily surprised one day when I walked into Union about a half-dozen years ago. She knew my wife from back when I was in college and was happy to see us and meet my kids. She always made my kids laugh by yelling “Dewey” when we came for a skate and telling some funny stories from back in the day. They didn't know I had a nickname or a life before them.
Janet was a great person. Anyone who knew her well will miss her. I know I will.

I met Janet 12 years ago as a freshman in High School when she hired me at the rink. She taught me how to be accountable as a first time employee, lessons that continue to stick with me, and over the many years after, never let me miss a USA hockey card payment each season (something we always joked about). She was a genuinely kind and all around great person and I’ll miss her presence at the front desk before the countless late games, she always brought a smile to everyone’s face and was the soul of the rink. I know I speak for many of the other players when I say she will be greatly missed

Janet was the heart and soul of Union Sports Arena. She knew all of my kids by name. Took the time to talk to them about not only hockey and skating but school, hobbies and friends. She watched my family grow over the years and always took a moment to talk to them even when she wasn’t feeling well and was walking out to go home after a long day. She will be missed at the rink but her life lessons will live on in my 3 hockey players.

Janet has been there for me from the very begining. The first time I met her in the cafe of the rink she was so sweet and so kind and that never changed. She would always make sure I said please and thank you. She passed on something that not many kids have these days. Compassion. She showed me what it was like to put others in front of herself. From making sure kid birthday parties were amazing to sleeping at the rink cause she knew she would have to be there early anyway. She will forever be in my heart. And her family and friends in my prayers. Thank you for all that you have done Janet. It will not be forgotten.

Janet was one of the most caring people I have ever met. From the first time I walked into Union Sports, she made me feel welcomed, and always made me feel like I had someone there for me. She could always tell when people were having a bad day, and gave them the tough love they needed to get back up and keep pushing forward. Whether it was through her food, her love of the sport, or her commitment to making USA feel like home for everyone who walked through the doors, Janet’s love and dedication shone through it all. It’s going to be hard to let go of a person who carried the spirit of USA within them. Someone who made everyone feel like they were part of the team, like family. Though Janet is no longer with us, her love, dedication, and life lessons will always be the foundation of USA.

Janet has been a part of my life as long as hockey has. My first day in the rink, I was greeted by her. Janet’s warm presence truly touched every single person who walked into Union Sports Arena. As we got older, I came to learn just how loving she was to anyone who walked into the door. Children, adults, fans, and siblings dragged along were treated all the same. Janet seemed to regard everyone she knew as family. In the past few years, I feel she has taught me some things that you cannot just read from a book. She taught me responsibility, accountability, but most importantly, the importance of genuine friendliness. Janet was a beautiful woman who will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Over the years that I have called Union Sports Arena a second hope for me, Janet has been there every step of the way. Janet was one of the greatest people I came to know and be around for 7 years, including when I was just coming upstairs for an amazing grilled cheese, to working with her. I came to know her as a second mom in some ways and a role model in another. Even with her issues she still came to work every day and did her job, and that’s something that everyone knows she did and respect that. Overall Janet was one of the world’s true treasures, and will be missed dearly throughout the Union Sports Arena community, family, and friends.

Thank you Janet for being my boss and my provider. Before I worked at Union, you would see me everyday in the front desk not even having to ask my name because I would always come in almost everyday for spring games. You were so nice to me along with other people and I wanted to work at Union because I would go there everyday and see the same faces. When I clock you, you now became my boss and a good one. You may be hard on me at times but I realize it’s for a reason. You want me to be a great worker and be really committed to USA. Because of you, I have finally grown up and understand what it means to work at this ice rink. Off my shifts, you also provided for me like a mother when it comes to HS games. You always texted me, email me, call me whenever someone needs a goalie cause like what you said: “You’re one of the best goalie and they really need you.” I’m happy that you were there to help me. Ask you always express it to everyday with the kids, thank you Janet for everyday you have done for me. You will be missed so much. No one can ever replace you and your legacy you left at Union.

Janet was more than a manager at work , she became my second mom, my “Rink Mom”. Over the course of 5 years, she has taught me life lessons that I will carry forever! She put everyone before herself , even when she became sick. I miss her dearly already. Janet, I know you are no longer suffering and can finally take a deep breath...I will always remember you and all the great memories we shared together. May your soul rest in peace.

To my dear friend, i am so heartbroken to lose you here on earth, but I know you are finally able to breath and breath deeply. I hope to run with you someday.

Janet was a combination of hockey mom, teacher, drill sergeant, confidante, friend, assistant – and much, much more. She was there the first time many of us or our kids started skating making sure we loved every minute of it, and that we always said "Please" and "Thank You" every time we ordered a hot chocolate. She taught many young rink employees how to be accountable, to be on time and how to make the best grilled cheese sandwiches, all the while encouraging us to continue growing. And she has been there for us every step of the way these past twelve years supporting us in the growth of our hockey programs at USA. Janet was the rarest type of person who you could find - someone you could always count on for anything, anytime, anywhere, all the while asking for nothing in return.
We will all really miss her at Union Sports Arena.
