Obituary of Mary Allegar

Mary (Catanese) Allegar, age 95, died on Monday, August 27, 2018.

 

Mary was born in Indiana, PA and was the daughter of the late John and Maria Catanese. She grew up in Plainfield, NJ area and graduated from Plainfield High School.

 

Mary worked as the Comptroller for the Park Hotel for 10 years. She was a member of the USO during WWII and took part in many war bond rallies. She was elected as Victory Belle for the commercial district representing Park Hotel for selling the most bonds.

 

Mary was a Red Cross Volunteer over 35 years, and a Staff Aide, registering blood donors. She served on the Disaster Committee during floods and participated in getting help to the military families.

 

Mary served on the Election Board in Watchung, NJ. She is the part member of the Catholic Daughters and Watchung Senior Citizens. She was on the Fundraising Committee for St. Mary's Stony Hill Church and Raritan Valley Hospital.

 

Mary was very politically active and was a faithful and dedicated Christian; knowing that her salvation is with the Lord.

 

She was very generous to family and a benefactor to over 20 charities.

 

Mary is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Howard W. Allegar in 2007; her son, Howard W. Allegar and her brothers Carl, Peter, Salvatore, and Frank Catanese.

 

She is survived by her son, Bruce J. Allegar and his wife Sue of Conroe, TX ; her brother, John Catanese of Hendersville, NC; 5 grandchildren, Nicole Allegar-Alexander and her husband Spencer; and Deanna Allegar, Kathryn Theiss, John Baughman and Andrew Van Keuren; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Elizabeth Theiss, Adeline Kathryn Theiss and David Lincoln Alexander and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

It is with the greatest sorrow we say goodbye to Mary and with the greatest joy we welcome her into eternity

 

A service will begin at 9 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung, NJ, on Saturday September 22, 2018 followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Stony Hill Church, 225 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
