Irene Stella Nakonechy, 92, passed away on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, at the New Jersey Eastern Star Home in Bridgewater, N.J.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 22, at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, N.J., from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of the Mount R.C. Chapel. Interment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, N.J.
Born in Bayonne, N.J., Irene lived there for 20 years before marrying her husband, John K. Nakonechy. She then moved to Staten Island, N.Y., where she and John lived for 26 years before moving to Warren, N.J., in 1972.
After raising her son, John, Irene briefly worked as a lunch aide in the Staten Island school system. She later went on to work for Off-Track Betting on Staten Island, retiring in 1988 as a branch manager.
Irene was a former member of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Stapleton, S.I., and was a member of Our Lady of the Mount R.C. Church since moving to Warren in 1972. Irene also enjoyed sewing and crocheting early on and enjoyed making trips to the Atlantic City casinos.
She was predeceased by her husband, John K., and her three brothers, Joseph Baro and his wife, Lucy, George Baro and his wife, Teresa, and Edward Baro. She is survived by her son, John J. and his wife, Jean, of Warren; granddaughter Lindsey and her husband, Tony; grandson Johnathan, and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Baro and Jane Keating. Also surviving are her lifelong best friends, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Giordano.
