Carol Waldman Piness, age 89, of West Orange, New Jersey, died on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, in her Green House Home at Green Hill Senior Living after a brief illness.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Henry and Dorothy Waldman, she graduated with honors from Battin High School in Elizabeth. After studying Liberal Arts and the Great Books in the College of the University of Chicago, an education she valued throughout her life, Carol moved to New York City and worked in administrative positions at Bing-Cronin Personnel Service and CBS until her marriage in 1952 to Sidney George Piness, M.D.
The newlyweds moved to Plainfield, where Sid established a private practice in Internal Medicine, retiring in 1997. Carol’s lifelong commitment to volunteerism, civic engagement and her community were evidenced by her dedicated service to non-profit organizations, including the Board of Directors of Neighborhood House Settlement House and Board of Trustees of United Family and Children’s Society. Membership on the Plainfield Juvenile Conference Committee for many years was a particularly meaningful volunteer appointment, as were decades as an Alumni Interviewer for her alma mater, the University of Chicago. Carol volunteered with the Plainfield Area Medical Association and served as Chairman of the Plainfield Heart Drive. She supported numerous endeavors related to Nancy's and Andy’s schools, including President of the Evergreen School PTA. Carol also worked in her husband's medical practice, earning the love and respect of several generations of devoted patients.
Carol was predeceased by her parents and her husband Sid, who died on October 17, 2009. Carol died one day before the ninth anniversary of her husband's death.
Surviving are her loving daughter, Nancy Piness of Washington, DC; devoted son Andrew Piness, and his wife Joan Wenner Piness of Chatham, NJ; and first cousins Dr. Aaron Welt of Morristown, NJ; Dr. Stephen Reibel of New York City; Robert Welt of Dongguan, China and Dr. Fred Welt of Salt Lake City, UT.
