Obituary of Melvin Slyvchak

Melvin Slyvchak, age 85, of Hudson, Florida passed away on October 11, 2018. Mr. Slyvchak was born in Luzerne, PA, raised in Newark and resided in North Plainfield for many years before retiring to Florida. He graduated from Arts High in Newark in 1950. Mr. Slyvchak proudly served in the United States Navy. Prior to his retirement in 1989 , he worked for the United States Postal Service in the mail room working his way up to and retiring as the Director of Finance. Mr. Slyvchak was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and was part of a Ukrainian dance team in his youth. He also was involved with the Cranford Patriots Drum & Bugle Corps for several years in the late 1970's creating many of the Corp's tee shirts, flags, posters and artwork. Mr. Slyvchak also enjoyed classic cars and wood working as a past time. Mr. Slyvchak is predeceased by his son Michael Steven Slyvchak in 2012. He is survived by his former wife Eleanor Slyvchak, his daughter Michele Soroka of Oxford, NJ his son Mark Slyvchak and his wife Amy of South Plainfield, NJ , his four grandchildren Krystle, Jake, Danielle and Hailey, one great-grandson Carmine and his loving companion Ms. Johnnie Greer. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, November 5, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. Military honors will be conducted at the close of the memorial visitation along with reflective memories from family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Lyons VA Hospital, 151 Knollcroft Road, Lyons, NJ 07939.
