Obituary of Hazel Yarrington
Hazel G. Yarrington
Hazel (Gunsel) Yarrington, 97, of Watchung, passed into Jesus' arms on Feb. 24, 2019, with her family at her side. Born at home in Chatham to Hazel and William Gunsel, she was the youngest of five children.
Hazel lived for many years in North Plainfield, where she raised her family, before moving to Basking Ridge and then to Watchung. She was predeceased by Warren T. Yarrington, her husband of 73 years, a Navy veteran of World War II.
After Warren joined the Navy during the war and shipped out to San Diego, Hazel, accompanied by her mother, traveled cross-country by train so she and Warren could be married. They returned home after the war ended.
She is survived by her daughters Gail (Paul) Wilson and Linda Yarrington; son Mark (Heidi) Yarrington; grandchildren Brad Holroyd, Lauren (Chris) Rathnam and Lindsey Yarrington; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by her brother William and sisters Mildred, Dorothy and Edith.
As the last of her generation, Hazel made it a point to stay connected with her nieces and nephews scattered from Hawaii to Florida to Maine.
A founding member of the North Plainfield Woman's Club, Hazel was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Dunellen, for over 60 years, and served for a time as church secretary. She will be remembered for her keen mind and attention to detail, which she maintained until her passing.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, followed by a funeral service on Saturday, March 9, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Community Options Red Ribbon Academy II, 2230 Camplain Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.
