Obituary of Sr. Gloria Jones

Sister Mary Gloria Jones  - Sister of Mercy

Sister Mary Gloria Jones, age 93,  died peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2019 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ.  She was born to Robert and Mabel Jones in 1926. Before she began her education, her family moved from New York City to Trenton, New Jersey where she attended St. Anthony Elementary School and Cathedral High School. Sister Gloria entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1945 at Mount St. Mary in Watchung and kept her baptismal name.  Sister Gloria continued her education at Georgian Court College (now University) where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught for the next 50 years in parish elementary schools in the Camden, Trenton and Metuchen dioceses: St. Mary’s, Camden; Star of the Sea, Atlantic City; St Joseph, Bound Brook; St. Francis, Metuchen and St. Paul, Princeton.

In addition to teaching reading, Sister Gloria enjoyed travel with friends in the summer and also parish activities and social events wherever she was stationed. Her name reflected her outlook on life and she shared her joy in  the happiness she found in teaching, friendships and living as a Sister of Mercy. When she retired from teaching in 1996, Sister moved to St. James Convent in Red Bank where she enjoyed the many advantages of that town and community and also contributed her services as needed. In 2012, Sister Gloria moved to McAuley Hall Health Care Center.

Sister Gloria  is survived by her nephews, Jeffrey, Mark and  Scott  Jones and cousins Barbara Woods and Patricia Jones of NJ

Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center 1633 Highway 22 Watchung, NJ 07069.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 AM
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
