Obituary of Sr. Yvonne Osborne

Sister Mary Yvonne Osborne, Sister of Mercy,   

Sister Mary Yvonne Osborne, age 95,  died peacefully on March 20, 2019  at McAuley Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ. Sister Yvonne was born in Passaic, NJ, the daughter of Harry and Mary Osborne. She attended St. Nicholas School in Passaic and St. Mary High School in Rutherford, NJ. Sister Yvonne graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in Red Bank, NJ where she was taught by the Sisters of Mercy .  In 1942 Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy at Mount St. Mary, Watchung, NJ. Sister Yvonne graduated from  Georgian Court College (now University)with a degree in Elementary Education.  Sister Yvonne began her long teaching career in schools in the Trenton and Metuchen dioceses and the Archdiocese of Newark. Her first assignment was at Saints Philip and James School in Phillipsburg, NJ followed by St. Paul School in Princeton and St Mary School in South Amboy.  Sister Yvonne received a Masters degree in Reading from Seton Hall University in 1969 . Due to a family emergency she moved to Florida to serve as a caregiver for her parents. While there, she also taught at Holy Rosary School in Perrine, FL. After eight years in Florida, Sister Yvonne returned to New Jersey and taught in St. Mary School, South Amboy, NJ and also directed the After-School program.  In 1992, she applied for a  position at Sacred Heart School, Newark, NJ.  Although she resided in South Amboy, NJ she commuted to Newark by train every day. Her love of children and her desire to help the poor fit with her motto “Love demands all.” Sister Yvonne was gracious and affirming with children, parents and colleagues. She was always willing to go beyond the norm.  Sister Yvonne retired to Mount St. Mary, Gabriel Hall, in Watchung, NJ and then to McAuley Health Care Center.

Sister Yvonne is survived by several nieces and nephews and many Sisters of Mercy.Memorial donations may be made  to the Sisters of Mercy, Mount St. Mary, 1645 US Highway 22, Watchung, NJ in memory of Sister Yvonne Osborne.

Visitation will take place at McAuley Health Care Center,1633 US Highway 22, Watchung, NJ 07069 on Saturday, March 23, 2019, from 8:30 to 10:30.

Welcome Home Service will be at 9:30am.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at  10:30am

Burial will be at  Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
