Sister Sarah McCulloch Sister of Mercy
Sister Sarah McCulloch, age 88, formerly Sister Mary Barnabas, died peacefully on at McAuley Health Care Center on March 28,3019. Sister Sarah was born in 1930 to Francis and Sarah McCulloch in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Her elementary education at St. Nicholas School and high school at Holy Spirit in Atlantic City introduced her to the Sisters of Mercy and she entered the community in 1948. Sister Sarah completed her formal education at Georgian Court College (now University) in Lakewood, New Jersey, with a degree in elementary education.
Sister Sarah ministered in the Trenton Diocese. Her first assignment was to St. Mary Academy in Lakewood, NJ. After eight years, she was transferred to St. Ann School in Keansburg, NJ before being named principal at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Milltown, NJ. After her term of office ended, she returned to the classroom as a teacher in St. Matthias School in Somerset, NJ; St. Ann School in Keyport, NJ; and to St. Mary’s Academy in Lakewood, NJ
In 1987 Sister left the teaching ministry but remained in Lakewood where she served as a workshop facilitator for Midlife Directions. She began a series of positions as receptionist and secretary at United Methodist Homes in Neptune, NJ and later as a social services support staff member at Francis Asbury Manor in Ocean Grove, NJ. There she enjoyed serving the needs of the senior citizens just as she had enjoyed her 38 years teaching children. Sister Sarah continued to live in Ocean Grove, NJ serving the needs of her neighbors and friends. In 2006, she transferred to Gabriel Hall at Mt. St. Mary in Watchung, NJ. Sister Sarah later moved to McAuley Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ.
Sister is survived by several nieces and nephews and many Sisters of Mercy.
