Obituary of Katherine Barata
Katherine “Kitty” Barata, age 84, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at RWJ Hospital at Somerset. She was born and raised in Montclair, and lived in Warren for 33 years before moving to Basking Ridge in 2005.
Before retiring, Kitty was a clerk at Pheasant Run Dry Cleaners in Warren and a sales associate in the gift shop at the USGA Golf Museum in Bernards Township.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Mount Roman Catholic Church in Warren.
Kitty enjoyed numerous activities such as playing tennis, bowling, listening to music, dancing, and knitting. She was also an avid reader. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren, whom she was affectionately known as Nana.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph D. Barata, in 2004; four siblings, Elizabeth Smith, Madeline Thatcher, Frank Cardell and Giro Cardell, and her parents Giro and Serafina Cardell.
She is survived by her three children, Karen Duncan, Joseph A. Barata and his wife, Lisa, and Laurie Barata; and six grandchildren, Kelly Duncan and her husband, Daniel Eckhardt, Andrea Duncan, Colleen Duncan, Dylan Stewart, Isabella Barata, and Aiden Lavoie.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung NJ 07069. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, July 13, at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of the Mount Chapel, 167 Mount Bethel Rd., Warren NJ. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge.
