I am so sorry to hear about Gary's passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences. He and I laughed all the time on the phone, and in-person, when I visited the NYC office. I never hesitated to pick up the phone to talk with Gary because I knew that no matter what issue we needed to discuss, there would always be laughs about Family Guy or some other crazy situation. He was a gem and I am lucky to have known such a kind person. Peace, love and serenity.

There were few people I have met who were so instantly charming as Gary. I was lucky to know him through my career in the insurance industry (I am forever grateful to Stephanie, my first boss in insurance). Gary's fundamental kindness, wit and humor always shone through, of course with a smile on his face. He convinced me that, yes, there are some pretty cool people in insurance. I am deeply saddened and my heartfelt sympathies go out to Stephanie, Olivia and the entire Schmidt family as well as all who knew him and will miss him. His passing is a real loss to us all, and he will not be forgotten.

I am shocked and very saddened by the passing of Gary. I had the pleasure to coach Gary here at Amelia Island for several years when he attended tennis camp with a group of his friends. Gary was just an amazing client to have on court. He was a hard worker, loved to learn new things, had great knowledge of the sport, and just simply loved the game of tennis. There was always this positive energy surrounding Gary. He always made my job so easy. He would always send me his thoughts after Roger Federer would lose because he knew I never took those well! As amazing of a tennis player as Gary was, it not even in comparison to how great of a person he was. I considered him a friend even though we only saw each other once a year at times. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

A few years ago, our team had a big USTA match and I was nervous beforehand. My then 5-year-old son asked, "Is Gary playing?" I said that he was, and Landon responded, matter-of-factly and without a moment's hesitation, "Oh, then you will win." Landon saw Gary through my eyes--as the best tennis player I've ever been on a court with.
Of course, to me, Gary became so much more than a tennis teammate. He was a dear friend, a kind soul who always had me laughing, who had something interesting to say on any subject, and who poured hours of time and effort into teaching me the beauty of the one-handed backhand. I will miss my friend so very much.
Also, though, he was a damn good tennis player: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GHeENm1ItE.

Met Gary on the tennis team at Hofstra. Gary was 1 of the most fun and sharp-witted guys I have ever met. He truly marked my US college experience. I will never forget the away matches with Coach Lynner driving the tennis van, and Gary in the back cracking us up (either with jokes, or very nasty farts). Will never forget the golf games we had at the motels between matches, with plastic toy golf clubs; or when Gary and Curtis joined me to drive down the South of France to play a few tournaments. Also won't forget his big serve and volley game. Big hugs to his wife and daughter.

Gary leaves such a hole in the lives of the Sayers family that it can scarcely be imagined. I feel fortunate to have gotten to know him over the last 16 years, and that my daughters were lucky to call him their "uncle Gary." I have such fond memories of Gary pulling into our driveway on one of his many visits, music blaring. We could hear him well before he got to the front door, and by the time that he swung it open and bellowed "Hellooooo" in an operatic voice, the girls had come running. I can imagine him so easily sitting at our kitchen table holding a drink and holding court--bantering with Curtis and entertaining us all with his snarky wit and his many sound effects and impressions. We are so blessed with many happy memories from all the times we visited and vacationed with Gary, Olivia and Stephanie, in Boston, Hoboken, Warren NJ, and Vermont. He will be truly missed but will hold a unique, special place in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

Gary's friends in Michigan are devastated by this loss. He was a wonderful guy and a true professional. And he was funny. He was the life of any gathering. It was truly a joy to be in his presence. To Stephanie and Olivia, know that Gary had friends all over the country, and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Mike Sullivan

Dear Stephanie, Olivia and family, I was very sad to hear this and wish there was something I could say to make less hurtful but I cannot.. Be strong for each other and keep all the memories you have made through the years close to your hearts always.
