Obituary of Sarah Elizabeth Atkinson

Sarah Elizabeth Atkinson, daughter of the late Mary Wilmore and Lester Gaither was born May 3, 1940, in South Carolina. She departed this life at age 79 at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey on Monday, January 13, 2020. In 1958 she moved to Plainfield New Jersey where she spent the rest of her life. Sarah earned her nursing degree from Elizabeth General. Her lifelong career as a Licensed Practical Nurse began at the Abbot Manor Nursing Home in Plainfield. She later went on to work for Runnels Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights and JFK Nursing Home. Sarah returned to the Abbot Manor Nursing Home to finish her career, until her retirement. She was a faithful and active member, Usher and former Deacon of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Sarah was affectionately known as (Squirt, Turkey, Mrs. A, Mama A and My Little Chicka Dee). Sarah enjoyed gardening, cooking, dancing, spending time with family and friends. Sarah loved a good seafood meal. She is predeceased by her husband Eddie T. Atkinson, grandmother Martha Wilmore and sisters Estelle Waters and Mamie Lee Davis. Sarah leaves to lovely cherish her memory, beloved daughter Denise Atkinson Jenkins, sister Dennen Martha Benson and brothers Willie James Benson, Willie B. Wilmore. Along with many dear relatives and friends.
