Obituary of Sr. Barbara Fried
The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception mourn the loss of their Sister Barbara Fried, SMIC, who died peacefully on February 3, 2020at the age of 79 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, New Jersey.
Sister Barbara was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 9, 1940 to Theodore and Jarie Fried.
Sr. Barbara entered the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God in 1966 in West Paterson, New Jersey. She attended St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, William Paterson University in Wayne, and NY University in New York City, earning a Master's Degree in Nursing Education in 1978. .
Sister Barbara devoted her missionary work to the nursing and teaching professions, practicing as staff nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boston, St. Joseph Hospital in Taiwan, and Preakness Hospital in Wayne. She was a Nursing Instructor at St. Joseph Hospital in Providence, St. Joseph Hospital in Paterson, Felician College in Lodi, and Sheng Kung Hospital in Taiwan. She also dedicated many years of service as a Coordinator for the Franciscan Missionary Service, the Clare House in Washington, DC, and assisting in the administration of the Province/Generalate. She retired in 2011, but continued her volunteer work in the Ministry of Presence to the residents of St. Francis in Denville and McAuley Health Care Center in Watchung.
Sister Barbara wished to be remembered as having tried to live her life as a vowed Franciscan, a missionary of the IC, and as a daughter of the Church with a lifelong passion for mission.
Sister Barbara's wake will be on February11,2020 followed by a funeral liturgy in the chapel at McAuley Health Care Center. Interment will follow in the cemetery of the Missionary Sisters on Rifle Camp Road, Woodland Park, New Jersey.
