Obituary of Sr. Mary Corita Corita Sweeney
Sister Mary Corita Sweeney died peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2014 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ.
Sister Mary Corita was born in Florence NJ and early in life moved to Burlington, NJ where she attended Wilbur Watts High School. After High School she delayed her entrance to the Sisters of Mercy until after WW II and often told the story of working in Bristol, PA for Fleet Wings Aerospace Company. Those working there were commonly called, in those days, "Rosie the Riveter". She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 and later received a BS degree in Elementary Education from Georgian Court College. She received a scholarship from the John F. Kennedy Foundation to Trenton State College and began studies in Special Education.
Her teaching career brought her to Holy Spirit School, Atlantic City; St. Ann School, Keansburg; St. Mary School, Perth Amboy; St. Joseph School, Keyport; McAuley School, Watchung, NJ and Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Atlantic City. After retiring Sister continued Volunteer work at McAuley School in Watchung until moving to McAuley Hall Health Care Center.
Sister Corita had a special love and gift for caring and teaching those with special needs. Through the years, she was also known for her very special "chocolate chip cookies" which she readily shared with others.
She is survived by her dearly loved sister, Elizabeth (Bebe) DiPierro and her husband Robert, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Wake will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am, with the Welcome Home Service at 9:45 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
