Obituary of Sister Martha Harcar
Sister Mary Martha Harcar, 97 died peacefully on March 20, 2020 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ.
Sister Martha was one of 12 children born to George and Mary Harcar in Trenton, New Jersey. The Harcar children attended Immaculate Conception elementary school in Trenton. Sister Martha attended Cathedral High School where she met the Sisters of Mercy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in September after graduating from Cathedral in June.
Sister Martha taught at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Atlantic City. In 1955, she was assigned to St. Mary School in South Amboy where she taught for 11 years. Over the next 29 years, Sister Martha taught in St. John School in Paulsboro, St. Mary School in Bordentown, Our Lady of Victories School in Sayreville, St. Elizabeth School in Bernardsville and St. Joseph School in North Plainfield. Sister Martha earned a BA degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College, Lakewood (now University) and MA from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ. Sister Martha transferred to St Paul and took the role of parish visitor in 1993. With her caring ways, gentle wisdom and faithful example of God’s loving attention to those in need, she grew to know several generations of families. Blessed with health and remarkable stamina, she ministered in Princeton for 23 years.
In 2016, Sister Martha moved to McAuley Hall in Watchung. In Princeton, her memory will live on for many more years. She is survived by her sister, Dr. Agnes Harcar, many nieces, nephews and Sisters of Mercy.
