So sorry to learn this . Sending condolences to Joe and family. Although I only knew “ BONINI” as I lovingly called her... for a short time thru Susan and Thomas.. I had the pleasure of trimming and conditioning her curly hair for the past few years!! What a HOOT!! Loved her jewelry and her stories. Jenn Day. TOUCH SALON

My deepest condolences to the Bonini family. I have so many fond memories of spending time at the Bonini's with my dear friend, Anne. Mr. & Mrs. Bonini opened their home to me and Anne & I had many a sleep-over at her beautiful home. Mrs. Bonini had such a talent for embroidery and I still remember an amazing framed piece of embroidery that was so detailed it looked like a painting. She kept her home full of antiques and miniatures, which I never tired of admiring. One day she asked if Annie and I would wake early and join her at the antique flea market. Even though it was very early, we were totally excited to go. What an honor! It was in that home that Annie taught me to make stuffed shells & where we tagged along and tortured her big brother Pete by just being silly little girls. I always loved to stop by at Christmas and admire her gorgeous tree. She knew how to make her house look picture perfect. In the virtual service, the priest mentioned that a way to honor Mari Bonini would be to do as she did. Mrs. Bonini may not have known then, but she does know now from where she sits in heaven, what a gift it was to spend time at the Bonini house. Mrs. Bonini welcomed me into her home when she already had plenty of her own children and never made me feel like a burden, but rather graciously accepted me. In her honor I will always remember to do the same for others. My thoughts and prayers are with her loving husband and children at this time. ~ Anne Hammond

To Uncle Joe & the Bonini Family,
I first met Mari when Bonnie & I returned from living in France. Among her first words to me were "George, I'm so glad you have married Bonnie & are now a member of our family." I thought this a rather strange statement from someone I hardly knew, so I asked why. Without hesitation she replied, " because I'm Irish surrounded by an Italian family & now I have someone who understands me!” But Mari never needed my help to stand up for her own ideas nor support for holding-up-her-own. But I did...an only child from an unsociable, inhibited, uncommunicative, Irish background.
When we were ready to buy a house we asked Mari to help. We wanted a short commute since our jobs were in Rahway & the other in Manhattan. Mari was so dynamic & sure of her choices that we never even questioned that the houses were mostly all in Plainfield & the one she sold hardest was around the corner from her & Joe. We bought it!! And loved it for 9 years till we both retired & moved to Florida.
Very sadly she agreed to sell. She felt badly that our commitment to Plainfield was not as strong as hers. But our beautiful 1880’s painted lady Victorian house, our connection to the Historic District Commission, the Symphony & even Mari's proximity were not enough to overcome the freezing, snowy winters. We're sure she had a feeling of abandonment when we moved. During the years that we lived in Plainfield, she asked us to call them Mari and Joe & so we did, but they were always Aunt Mari & Uncle Joe...
When we returned to New Jersey for our granddaughter's high school graduation a couple of years ago, we were able to visit Aunt Mari & Uncle Joe. It was joyous as well as very sad. Little did we know it would be our last visit.
Right now, we wish we could be with Uncle Joe & the family, giving hugs & personally sharing parts of our life with Aunt Mari that touched all of us so deeply.
Aunt Mari you are & will continue to be sorely missed. We love you!
Bonnie & George

Dear Joe and Family,
I will miss Mary! We started out friendship when I became a member of the Plainfield Board of Education in the late eighties. It did not take very long before we knew that each of us wanted to do the best we could for the children of Plainfield. A partnership of working collaboratively toward that end was formed. During my last campaign and Mary's first (she had been appointed to the Board for many years), we were successful running mates. I sit here remembering when we were at a conference in San Francisco and Mary decided that we should rent a car a ride to Carmel-by-the-Sea. I probably would not have visited that beautiful place on my own. I will miss Mary! Sincere Condolences and Love

Thank you, Nani, for bringing our family together every holiday and reminding us of what truly matters. You were such an important influence in my life and you have given me wonderful memories. I could watch you embroider for hours in all your glory, so peaceful. Your accomplishments and fearlessness is amazing to me and I am honored to be your granddaughter. Until we meet again, I love you.
