Mrs. Payne was very special to me and to my family. Our families have been friends since about 1960 when Brenda and I were in kindergarten. Brenda was my best friend in childhood and I spent many happy days and overnights at the Payne’s. Mrs. Payne served us countless bowls of tomato soup and put ice packs on our bee stings, took us swimming and out for treats (DQ! DQ!) and all those countless things adults do to make our childhoods safe and happy. She was very kind and generous to me and my family. When our father passed away, the bridge club took turns taking all 5 of us Keweshan kids for the whole day on Saturday so mom could take her college classes. They were all truly like second parents to us. I remember Mrs. Payne as always smiling and ready to laugh. And she was ageless! She has looked the same to me for 40 years! I have a lot of memories of spying on the bridge club when it was at our house. They were always laughing and having so much fun. As an adult, maybe I should say an aging adult, you come to realize how important people were in your young life and I wanted to let her know how much I appreciated her, so I have kept in touch. I’m so sad that she is gone and I will always love her like a second mother.

Phyllis was such a lovely lady- always warm and kind and welcoming. Phyllis and Henry were friends of my parents for many years and I know they were cherished by them. Nothing but fond memories of them both. So sorry to hear of her passing, May God bless her and her family.

I was so sorry to hear of Phyllis’s passing, there are so many memories she and her family left to us. My folks were in the bridge club with the Paynes, Yankaskas’s and Boyances. When my dad passed, they all pitched in to help my mom while she finished her teaching degree. Many meals at the Payne house, and had my first encounter with a pepper. Didn’t know you could eat those, not from a shaker. Occasionally I’d give Phyllis a dance spin and a dip, then Henry would boom “Hey kid! Get your hands off my wife!” then have a laugh. She always envied my sister’s little feet. I listened to their “West Side Story” album in her living room. So many memories you left us with Phyllis. You live on with us with love. Charlie Keweshan

I loved playing cards with Mrs. Payne after Christmas Caroling for Cub Scouts. She even beat me a few times! She was so nice and she always gave me candy. I can't believe she's gone :( She was the oldest person I ever knew. I will miss her!

Aunt Phyllis was one of 6 children and the oldest daughter of 2 daughters but she also had 4 brothers. She lived most of her life in central New Jersey but always hoped. She always hoped to have only daughters if that were her druthers. She married a man from the Navy during WWII. He fell in love with her in an instant, when his mission brought them together, even though, it was distant. Together they had 2 girls and eventually Aunt Phyllis became a Volunteer Director in a hospital. Sharing her gifts to her was capital! She joined clubs so that she should crotchet She also was a golfer. Additionally, some traveling made her a circumnavigator. I, myself, Kerri, her niece, willl always remember Aunt PHyllis as someone who loved to be a hostess. Holidays were often filled with family, food, and sharing experiences wtth people who cared the mostest! May Aunt Phyllis rest in peace.
Much sympagthy,
Aunt Rose and Kerri Sullivan
