Obituary of Eleanor A. Vuoncino

Eleanor Ann Mercuro Vuoncino, our beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at home on June 11, 2020 in Bridgewater, NJ. She was born on June 30, 1918 in Newark, New Jersey and lived a long and happy life. In fact, she was just shy of her 102nd birthday! Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband Leon Joseph Vuoncino in 2004. They are now together again and will be for the rest of eternity. She leaves behind two daughters, Lisa Voncino and Diane Vuoncino Lange (Richard) and four grandchildren, David Cooper, Amanda Lange, Andrew Cooper and Jaclyn Lange. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Eleanor was the daughter of the late Florence Catena and the late Anselmo “Frank” Mercuro and had two sisters, the late Virginia Sperry and the late Lucille Mercuro. She was a graduate of West Side High School in Newark, NJ and Drake Business College in Elizabeth, NJ. She proudly served her country in the Navy WAVES during World War II. She attended Naval Training School at Hunter College in New York City and Yeoman’s School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Eleanor graduated as a Yeoman Second Class and was stationed in Oakland, California. After the war, Eleanor worked for Rutgers University as a secretary in the History Department where she met her husband. She later worked for the Plainfield Public School System for many years and served as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. She loved her work and strongly believed in the importance of education. When she retired, she enjoyed travelling with her husband and keeping up with her grandkids! Eleanor will be remembered for her kind heart, sense of humor and love for her family. She possessed inner and outer beauty along with a love of dancing, reading, long walks, and current events. In her later years, she enjoyed relaxing in her tracksuit and sipping a Cosmo! She will be forever missed by her family. She was our matriarch, a class act, and only had goodness in her soul.
