John and I attended the University of Oklahoma in the graduate school of the Dept. of Chemistry. We were close friends and studied together. We both finished the graduate course in organic chemistry, barely passing with identical grades of B - -. Making a C meant we would have to take the class over. All of the organic chemistry majors in the class made C or lower. We were very proud of our B - -'s
We went out to eat at the restaurants in Norman that had specials each week. I remember the department chairman, finding out that John was a pilot, saying to John that he had 200 hours flight time in a boasting manner. He then asked John how many hours did he have? John replied rather sheepishly, 4000 hours. End of conversation.
We were there the night they brought John Andrew home. We just lost touch over the years. I was looking for him on the internet 12/19 and found his obituary. Sounds like he lived a very full life. Wish we would have stayed close. He was a fine man.
