Obituary of Harriet Asante-Appiah
Harriet Asante-Appiah, 56, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey. The third of six children of Mr. and Mrs. Sarpong, she was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana; Harriet had also resided in London, England; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Montreal, Quebec (Canada) before moving to Green Brook, New Jersey nine years ago.
Harriet was a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec (Canada), having earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She worked for many years as a social worker. Most recently, Harriet had been employed by the Allegro School in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, where she worked as an educator with developmentally challenged students over the past 4+ years.
Harriet was a devout Christian and an active member of the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Warren, New Jersey.
Harriet’s interests included gardening (which occupied a lot of her time in the warmer months) and shopping at the local stores with her close friends. She liked to entertain visitors and cook dishes from different cultures. Harriet also enjoyed taking adventurous trips particularly to distant places. Her favorite activity was exercising at the Basking Ridge YMCA with her friends.
She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Ernest; her dear son, Michael, and her siblings Jane, Alfred, Anthony and the twins, Reginald and Regina. She will be missed by all.
A visitation will be held on Friday November 20, 2020 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, NJ. A funeral service will also be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge, NJ.
