To the family of Dr. Elaine Walker, I pray that you continue to be strengthened with peace and comfort. Dr. Walker inspired me and was instrumental in my Ph.D. doctoral journey. I am grateful for her insight, guidance, and encouragement and am pleased to state that on May 12, 2022, I successfully defended my dissertation and heard the words, “Dr. Cassandra Graham.” Dr. Finkelstein, my debt of gratitude extends to you as well. In an email two years ago, you encouraged me with the words, “I look forward to your graduation” - well, see you in May 2023! Sincerely, Cassandra Graham, Ph.D.

Dear Dr. Walker, My heart hurts today, for I was just informed of your passing. I know that although your body has expired, your spirit lives on. Oh dear dear Dr. Walker, thank you, thank you, thank you for your guidance, your mentorship, your leadership, your love. You saw me through so many iterations, through so many health and life challenges. I am forever grateful to you, for your undying support in my becoming Dr. Cheryl McClendon. More importantly, it is because of you that I am wiser, more grounded and content within my life. Throughout my defense process you embraced me and Donna and became part of our village. We will forever love you and honor you, Dr. Marie Walker. Until we meet again...

Dr. Walker was the sole reason why I finished the Doctorial program at Seton Hall, more importantly her kind gentle demeanor was a breathe of fresh air in the mist of the daily madness. She had high expectations and demanded that we give 100 percent effort in our research. I will miss my office visits, filled with laughter every time we met. She know all of her students by their first names and always inquired about their well being. Thank you Dr. Walker for all that you did for me. Rest well my friend! Condolences to the family, may the the Creator grant you peace and strength during this difficult time.

Marie was one of the most genuinely kind, loving and caring persons that I have ever known. We met in 1973 when we were both students at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. We reconnected in 1978 when she came to Howard University to pursue her graduate studies and we became close friends. About four years ago we reconnected on a deeper more spiritual level. Marie showed me such warmth and caring at a time in my life when I really needed it. She was a shining example of love in action and I will always cherish the precious happy times that I spent at her beautiful home, sharing our life experiences and our hopes and dreams for the future. It's still difficult for me to fully accept that Marie's earthly being is no longer with us. I do believe however that she will live on in so many ways and her presence will forever be indelibly etched within all who love her. Mu heartfelt sympathy goes out to Marie's precious daughters, her siblings and all who love her. You will continue to be in my prayers. Rest well dear, sweet Marie. You will always occupy a special place in my heart.
Love you,
Rosemary

I first met Elaine when she became the Independent Evaluator for a Non-profit I was running. I am beyond lucky to have known her and blessed that we became friends. Elaine's calm demeanor, amazing spirit, & wisdom have impacted so many. I have been profoundly & permanently changed, for the better, because I knew her!
It has been said that a friend is someone who dances with you in the sunlight and walks with you in the shadows. We spent some time dancing, and I lost a dear friend who certainly walked with me through the shadows.
I was always amazed when Elaine would call, seemingly out of nowhere, to check-in because she sensed something was wrong - she, of course, was always right! Elaine was the kind of person who took the time to make everyone's day just a bit brighter. Up until the very end, Elaine continued to serve as an inspiration to all around her. She faced her illness with courage and dignity and never complained.
I miss you immensely but will not let today's tears mar the smiles that we shared when you were alive.
My heart aches for Ashleigh, Jody, and all of her family members who grieve this enormous loss, but I am confident that Elaine is watching over all of you and will carry you through these difficult days and beyond.
Rest easy, my dear friend, for yours was a life well-lived!

Dr. Walker and I bonded immediately via our connection with Buddhism, two lone Buddhists in the midst of a Catholic University...I was in Dr. Walker's class when my brother passed away... it was at a time when I really didn't have much will to go on, let alone complete coursework. Her true embodiment of loving-kindness at this moment was something felt very ethereal and affirming... two years later when I approached the steps of my graduation ceremony, I watched as she (who was announcing the names) looked up from her list as a smile spread across her face... I knew she KNEW what a feat it was for me to be standing there and I knew she was truly proud of me for making it... as I walked up the stairs, Dr. Walker abandoned the list and the protocols held at graduation, folding her hands and bowing to me in the SAME exact way as I graduated from Naropa (a Buddhist university) many moons ago... at THAT moment, I knew I was in the right place doing the right thing and that my brother (who had graduated himself from SHU) was there with me. I will never forget the way her presence affirmed my life's path for me, the kindness she showed to all beings, and the brilliance that will forever serve as a model for me to strive towards. It is with a heavy heart that I write this, but hoping that she is somewhere reading this, remembering that moment, and knowing that she will forever be in our hearts.

Over our almost 50 years of friendship, Marie and I have remained connected although separated by many miles and the ups and downs of life. It would take just a phone call for the bonds to be re-established and built upon even after years of no communication between us.
So my memories of our times at UWI include Marie singing to tunes on the radio, her serious attention to learning and her fashion sense (short shorts and mini skirts).
I am glad that we had the mini vacation in Ocho Rios about 9 years ago and that I was able to be at your wedding in 2014.
Marie leaves a rich legacy from her extended family to her amazing daughters and her contribution to higher learning.
I will truly miss you, my friend.

Sean, Sasha and I convey our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Marie’s wonderful family and friends. Marie was a remarkable woman, an educator, compassionate, caring, kindhearted and generous person. Marie always seemed so happy, full of life and purpose, surrounded by the people she loved, in the place she loved best.
To a woman you may have called a wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, an acquaintance, a teacher, a friend or grandmother...no matter what it was you called her, Marie was always there to answer with encouraging words. We thank you for inspiring generations; you will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
We will always have fond memories of all those great gatherings in our respective homes and the wonderful times we spent together in laughter, good times, hard times through life’s journey. We will never forget her kindness and extraordinary heart.

Her enthusiasm for teaching and helping her students gain mastery, as well as her goal of being a better person every day than the day before stuck with you. She was a professor that made every class a true learning experience that you looked forward to coming back to and had a knack for making concepts that originally seemed difficult, realistic instead, by providing you with examples of how data was gathered and used in her everyday experiences. Marie and I attended and were in fact class mates in the 60's at Wolmer's Girls School, a prestigious high school in Jamaica. Together with her younger sister Dr Marcia Sutherland (with whom I formed a lifelong bond) we all became fast friends. Marie, was the quieter one, always focused on her academics and the task at hand. She maintained this character trait & discipline to rise to the top of her profession, earning the respect and admiration of her peers. She was also a role model for her siblings and children. Marie, though time and space later separated us, your loving & gentle spirit will remain fresh in my mind as I envision your smiling face. Your transition was peaceful as you were.
