It is with a heavy heart that I write these words today, and it is with tear-filled eyes that I remember Joe. I have known him since I was 6 years old! As the manager of Bilkays Express, Joe was instrumental in hiring the young people in my family. The boys worked on the dock, and at age 17, I was fortunate to work in the office, my first “real” job, and did so for 4 summers! I often babysat for his girls and so enjoyed the many birthday and holiday parties and barbecues at their home. Joe was always there with a helping hand, and it usually had a hammer, saw, or paint roller in it. Often, he just showed up, saying, “Ya’ gotta help the kids!” Yet, we were only 10 years younger than he was!
I am so sorry for you, Barbara, for Kristin, Sharon, Elena and your spouses, and for JT and Wyatt. May your precious memories sustain you during these trying days and in the future. I believe that Joe would want all of us to smile again, perhaps emulating his distinctive grin.

Dear Barbara, Kristen, Sharon, and Elena,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this and say goodbye to your father and my Uncle Joe. I only have happy memories of the times we would travel up north to your house and spend time with family. Your father was always very kind and caring to me and made sure every time that I saw him he asked about how I was doing. He had a special laugh and smile that I will always remember. Please take care of each other and your family. I am sorry that I could not be there today to pay my condolences to you all and to say thank you to your father. He was a special man. He did a lot for my family without ever asking for anything in return.
Your Cousin Nicky

Uncle Joe was the kindest, generous & caring family member to the Werkman family. His BBQ’s, holiday & birthday celebrations were the best!! He fixed, built, repaired & made so many things for us. He was very special & “ one of a kind!” Loved his children, grandchildren & family so very much! Rest In Peace Joe. Give Roxie a big hug from all of us! She has her Pop Pop with her now!

The Balogh Family called him Joe Joe. That's because our beloved father was also named Joe, and we needed a way to differentiate between the two stubborn Hungarians. They met on Hillcrest Terrace in Union, NJ in the early 60s where many a party was held with Joe Joe and Grandma Matyas and the entire crew! What fond memories. The two remained friends until our father's death in 2014. Joe Joe was always there for my dad, especially in his decline, and holds such a special place in all our hearts. We are so very sorry for your terrible loss Kristin, Sharon, Elena and Barbara. We see the two Joes up in heaven arguing over some nonsense (as they always did), but with love and affection.
Our deepest condolences to you all.

Dear Barbara, Kristin, Sharon and Elena,
TD and I are so very sorry that Uncle Joe has passed. He was one of a kind and we surely will miss him. I have so many fond memories of him dating back to the early 1960's when he and his mother, Grandma Matyas, lived in the house he built in Short Hills. Many a Sunday afternoon was spent in the rec room watching the adults dancing the polka and csardas with Uncle Joe presiding along with his siblings and their spouses, cousins, nephews and nieces while Grandma toiled in the kitchen. To me he was always the life of the party!
We are so grateful that we had one last visit when Uncle Joe and Barbara met us in Atlantiic CIty this past March.
We know he's smoking a stogie and winning big at a five star casino in the sky!
Love you much Uncle Joe.
