Dear Mary Ann, just today I heard the very sad news that Tom has passed. Although I only met you and Tom once at Wyatt’s Baptismal in May of 2019, the warmth and love our family felt in both of you was evident from the beginning. I have no doubt Tom is with Our Lord and the Angels. My heart goes out to you and the family on your tremendous loss. Please know you are in our prayers and thoughts and that Tom has touched us very deeply.
May your wonderful Tom always Rest In Eternal Peace and may you feel him all around you. Love, Linda Levy

Dear Mrs. O'Dea and O'Dea Family,
Sending you my love and prayers for loss of your husband and father. He was a wonderful and kind man, someone who I always enjoyed seeing throughout the years while growing up in Warren, or when I spent time with Kenny. He is/was the definition of what is means to be a father. I watched his tribute video and feel honored to have known him. Sending you all my love & prayers. I look forward to celebrating his life with you, later this year in July.

Michael J. Breslin, Jr. posted a condolence
Tuesday, February 9, 2021
My name is Jerry Breslin and I also grew up on Irving Place in Rutherford. I remember the O’Dea family moved from Hornell, New York, because Tom’s father received a promotion with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. My grandfather, John Breslin, worked as a switchman for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad for fifty years, and he and my grandmother raised a family of ten in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, one of which was my father Michael. I can remember specifically playing many games of stickball, touch football and backyard basketball with Tom for years when we were in grade school and early high school years.
Tommy, along with Eddie Herbert, Jackie Campbell and myself, had many happy times together growing up, which is the way it should be in America.
Tommy was a very likable and good and honest man. I also went to St. Mary’s. I was in the class of 1955 and also knew your mother, Mary Ann Branon, who was a few years behind me. My wife Mary, the former Mary Henny, was a 1959 graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, New Jersey, apparently where your mother also graduated from.
I can remember playing with Tom and other kids on the Rutherford High School soccer field. One beautiful Saturday morning with Tom and other kids, I remember specifically that morning my father walking down the street to tell Tommy to go home, that his father wanted to speak to him. As Tommy left and was going back to his house, my father told the rest of us that Tommy’s brother Jimmy had been killed. I think it was at Iwo Jima at the age of nineteen. Jimmy was apparently an excellent track man and went to Pope Pius for some reason, as opposed to St. Mary’s where most of the other O’Deas went.
I also remember Mary Ellen and her husband, Bob Liddle, who again were great people. Later on, as a young lawyer, I started to participate in the Democratic Party in Rutherford. I spent many a time campaigning on behalf of and spending time at the campaign meetings with Frank, who ultimately was elected to the counsel, which was a rare feat for a Democrat in those days and to be elected to anything in Bergen County as a Democrat.
In fact, I believe I purchased my second life insurance policy from Tom after I was discharged from the Army, wherein those days if you were an officer, you had to take a $10,000.00 policy that the government issued.
I am quite sure that you are all a credit to your mother and father, and one of the joys of my life was growing up with Tommy. It appears that he is with God in Paradise, specifically because he left his footprints on Earth while he was here.
With warm personal regards,
Jerry

Uncle Tom - a true "gentle" man. So many memories come to mind thinking of Uncle Tom and the life he lived. Through all the memories what stands out to me is how he always made me feel welcome and loved. He and Aunt Mary Ann touched so many people simply with their love and sincerity. That is a true legacy.
Uncle Tom never pursued power, wealth, fame or notoriety. Yet, the power of faith and the wealth of love was abundant in his life. That is what made him one of the most successful men I know. In simply "being" himself, he affected hundreds of lives in such positive ways. So many people struggle to find the way to a happy and successful life, we are all fortunate to have a first-hand example of a most happy, successful and blessed life!
To my O'Dea cousins, you are truly blessed as your father will forever be a part of you.
To Aunt Mary Ann, your strength, faith and love helped Uncle Tom live his life of purpose. He will always be with you. Love you all and may Uncle Tom rest in eternal peace. Love, Maureen O'Dea Strehl and family

Tom was always a stellar guy. We were classmates from 2nd grade through high school. While we went in different directions in life, another classmate would visit the O'Deas in FL and NJ and I followed that way. Maryann was in my brother's class K-8th.
So gratifying to know what a strong faith and appreciation for family Tom and Maryann instilled in their sons. St. Mary's gave us that foundation and it was natural to pass it on to our large families. My condolences and prayers to your family.

To Mary Ann, Mark, Tom, John, Ken, Chris, Dan, and your families -
I will never forget the first time I met Tom - he was Mr. O'Dea to me then as I was the teenage babysitter in Rutherford for sons #1 - 4. I remember him as being quiet yet firm, and always with a wonderful smile and laugh.
I reconnected with all of you some years later and got to meet Chris and Dan and visited a few times at your home in Central NJ. Then after many more years - I saw everyone again at Mary Ann's 80th birthday party. What a joy to see the wonderful men you have all grown into, and to see Tom and Mary Ann so full of love! I wish I'd had the opportunity to know Tom better - but am very blessed all the same to have even known him as I did - and through the memorial video to see how many lives he touched with his presence, humor, and love.
Thank you for live streaming the funeral mass - it touched my heart deeply.
I wish you God's peace in your hearts and souls through this very difficult time. There really are no words - only love.
Blessings, Marijane

For Uncle Tom, Aunt Mary Ann and all my Cousins:
I remember little snippets of life when Uncle Tom lived with us back in 1960 and was so proud to be your flower girl the following year. From back then and to the blessing he gave at Jess and Steve's wedding I am forever thankful to you both for always being there. I will cherish every memory of all of us together: weddings, birthdays, Yankee games, graduations, reunions and, of course, funerals. He has truly been the patriarch of our family, as well as yours, since my Dad's passing in 1987. He has always been a shoulder to lean on and we have been blessed with his grace, humility and kindness throughout our lives. I'm so happy that he was able to come to Rutherford to see the military banners of his brothers and have lunch with a few of us in October. Happy he was also able to make it over to the Baylander in NY as well. I know, we all worried about COVID, but were as safe as we could be ( except maybe for pictures.. ) It's a lesson to always " seize the day ".
I'm forever lucky to call him family and thankful he was part of my life.
I love and will miss you my Dear Uncle.
Rest in Peace

Mary Ann, I have always been proud to be your "oldest friend" since we were in St. Mary's Kindergarten and on through school years into our married lives. Tom too has been in my life since childhood - he came with his brothers to play basketball at the peach basket that hung on the garage of my cousin Harry Monahan next door; he, along with my sister Dot, always hoping to get in their shots! How could I not be excited to see him joined in marriage with Mary Ann. Over the years it has been a pleasure to remain in their huge circle of friends. No matter where they lived, they added to their admirers through the kindnesses and special warmth exuded by this special pair. Tom might have moved on to the reward set out for him by his love of God and family, but he will remain within our hearts with his ready smile!

I will always remember your husband, father and grandfather as the kindest man, standing on the Dartmouth Green in Hanover when I first met him on a fall day of 2015, when he came to visit you. I knew of Tom O’Dea only second hand, through his son Mark. Mark used to boast and smile upon telling stories of his dad, whom he obviously loved very much. One in particular was how his dad used to sell insurance door to door and collect their payments on Friday. His book of business would today have overloaded many an iPhone. The man was a legend...and more importantly was a wonderful role model instilling integrity and goodness in his children, as I have witnessed through his son Mark ( who is also a mentor to one of my sons ). I’m certain Mr. Thomas O’Dea will be missed by many but never forgotten. His memories will live on as those who remember him will fondly tell you. May he Rest In Peace knowing that he lived a full life and spread goodness and love. With my deepest sympathies, Ben Strober

To all the O'Deas,
I know the last two weeks have been hard -- it's just hard to think of life without Uncle Tom being there, whether it was a holiday, a game, a graduation, a birthday party -- he was such a constant, gentle, peaceful and assuring presence and he was always there for everyone else, and you just knew he would be. And he was there for all of us because he loved his family more than anything. These are the attributes of Tom that will stay with me in my mind and my heart forever -- a family man of enduring peacefulness and patience and good nature and generous spirit.
Uncle Tom was my godfather -- something my parents picked for me based on the trust and love and support between them and MA & T (and to think, they already had 6 boys of their own at that point!?) -- but he was also my confirmation sponsor, which is something I did get to pick! And I remember vividly asking him to sponsor me in confirmation because I could feel his faith and his goodness and his constant support, even when I was just 12 or 13. We always shared a warm embrace when we saw each other and I always felt he was present in the moments when we all came together, which were so often over the years.
I know we're all going to miss him dearly ... but what a legacy of faith and family and of a life well-lived to leave behind for all of us to cherish and emulate.
I've added the last photo I took of Uncle Tom -- it's with my daughter Molly (real name Mary :)) taken last summer, pre-Covid, when MA & T were our second house guests at our new home in Arlington. We had a wonderful visit and took a nice walk through the woods before having dinner and all talking for a couple hours. What a great time and memories for us and our kids. We're going to hold onto them and all the others.
Love, Brendan

The memory of my Dad goes back over 50 years. He spent his entire life with us and for us. I struggle to convince myself that he is gone. I have woken up almost every morning since WED night thinking I just had a dream. A bad dream. It takes me several moments to concentrate and conclude that Dad has passed. I feel sad every day. I have felt mad too. I prayed last week, over and over. I stopped by church, in the middle of the day. I went to confession. I lit a candle for him and asked God to save him. ...
...God did save him. He saved him when his brother Jimmy was killed in action in the Pacific. He saved him when Aunt Margaret moved in when his Mom was too ill to help. He saved him in 1959 when he brought Mom into his life. He saved him when he had 6 boys; then 4 wonderful daughter-in-laws; 6 wonderful grandsons and 1 special granddaughter. He saved him with every Mass he attended, every sporting event we played, every friend he every made. My Dad was special; everybody that ever met him thought so. So many times I hear a story or watch a TV show or movie where someone says, "I just want my Dad to be proud of me.".............I've decided I will never say that. Instead, "Dad, I'm proud of YOU!"
- I have always loved you.

Dear “Aunt” Mary Ann, Mark, Tom, John, Ken, Chris, and Dan: My heart aches for the loss of “Uncle” Tom. I say Aunt and Uncle because that’s how I’ve know both you, Aunt Mary Ann, and Uncle Tom since the day I was born. My Mom and Aunt Mary Ann have been lifelong best friends since college. The to-be O’Dea’s and the to-be Dobson’s double dated. And the O’Dea boys and the Dobson kids wall grew up together. I have a very special place in my heart for Uncle Tom because he was such a steady and welcoming presence in my life after my Dad passed suddenly in 1975. There was never a day that Uncle Tom and Aunt Mary Ann did not joyously welcome us to that wonderful Washington Rock Road residence and we passed many days having a grand time there. I still smile every time I pass that house when I make my way into Watchung to visit Mom. In fact, we would not be in Watchung had it not been for Aunt Mary Ann and Uncle Tom “recruiting” is there. I am forever grateful for Uncle Tom’s steady love and support. I’m sure my Dad joyously greeted Uncle Tom in heaven and thanked him and Aunt Mary Ann for keeping my Mom in line all these years. I love you all and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in July. I will be online and praying with you next Saturday. Love. Matt Dobson

Mr. O’Dea,
I never met you but I know your son. Danny changed my life. He helped me become the man, father, coach, and teacher I am today. You have a beautiful family that is doing so much good in the world. Rest easy knowing you made this a better a place. “May joy and peace surround you, contentment latch your door. And happiness be with you now and bless you evermore

This is beautiful. Reading this brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. While I don’t have any stories to tell, I remember Mr O’Dea from the sidelines of pop Warner football games and well into Danny’s high school years. Thank you for sharing this beautiful tribute with us all. Heaven has gained an angel to watch over you all. In peace and love, Jenn (Schumann) Sargent

We mourn the passing of Tom O'Dea. We knew Tom as a friend, always quiet and steadfast. He was a nice gentle man with a great smile and a kind word. Tom leaves behind a wonderful legacy: six sons and a devoted and faithful wife for many decades. We shall miss Tom. May he rest in peace.

Uncle Tom...
There are no words. The memories go back.. to dinners with mom and dad... to camping trips at Swartswood Lake... to lunches at Friendlies when I worked at Children's Garden and you worked across the street in Morristown. You and Aunt MaryAnn were the people I ran to when I had issues and you always reassured me that everything would turn out okay... and you were right. I know you were greeted by my father and you have many stories to share. Your legacy will continue to live on in all the memories we share and the fantastic family you and Aunt MaryAnn raised. Rest in Eternal Peace.

I go back to 1959 knowing you when you started to date Mary Ann and Sally has known you, Tom, since 1968. And I was in your wedding in 1961. That's a lot of years. We have never seen you lose your temper. You have been a rock of stability for your six sons and for all of us. We miss you. Love, Mark and Sally
