Mary McCue

Obituary of Mary McCue

On Tuesday, March 2, 2021 Mary McCue passed away at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ with with her husband, of 61 years, Thomas McCue by her side.

Mary, also known as Maria Natale Costello-McCue, was born in Newark, NJ on December 24, 1936 in the Ironbound section. Her parents came to the United States from Sicily through Ellis Island back in the early 1900’s. She was first generation Italian and very proud of her heritage. Mary was an amazing cook who loved to feed people when they came to her home. Christmas Eve was a special time since it was her birthday. When she was younger, Mary and her husband Tom put on the best spread of the the seven fishes on Christmas Eve.

Mary was all about family and loved her four grandchildren and all her nieces and nephews. She was a home maker for her entire life. When her kids were younger, she volunteered at Union Hospital and very much enjoyed the interaction with the patients.

She was amazing at crocheting and each grandchild meant a new baby blanket. She made potholders for every holiday or occasion. Potholders for friends, neighbors, nieces, hospital care takers and just about anyone. There will be a piece of Mary in all their kitchens.

Every morning, Mary spent time with Tom doing the jumble puzzle in the Daily News. It became a true competition of who could solve it first. As she grew older, Mary became a die hard Yankees fan who never missed a game.

Mary and Tom were members of the Elks in Union and spent summers at the pool and attended events at the Elks with the many friends they made over the years. She and her husband Tom vacationed every year in WildWood Crest and enjoyed their quiet time together.

Mary was a member of St. Michaels church and was a devout Catholic. Even though she could no longer attend mass, she said her daily prayers and rosaries. She loved St. Anthony and Saint Joseph. If you were traveling, she prayed for your safe travels. If you were sick, she prayed for your health. Her care and compassion for others came naturally.

Mary is predeceased by her parents Lucia and Joseph Costello along with her five siblings. She is also predeceased by her son-in-law Robert Gagliano. Mary leaves behind her husband, Thomas McCue, daughters Lori Gagliano and Michelle McCarthy, son-in-law, Jim McCarthy and grandchildren, Jamie Gagliano, Megan McCarthy, Jimmy McCarthy and Chris Gagliano.

A bright light no longer burns, but an Angel just received her wings.
