Born August 1, 1944 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late David Hershkowitz and the late Elaine Tessler Hershkowitz. A graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, he went on to SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. To escape the brutal winters in Syracuse, Mike wanted to go "as far South of the Mason Dixon line as possible" and did a year of general medicine at Jackson Memorial, in Miami, FL. While trying to decide which Medical path he wanted to take he was drafted and served in the Marine's as a Medical Officer. During his two years of service he discovered his passion for Ophthalmology. He did his Residency at Albert Einstein Hospital in New York and opened his own practice in Livingston, New Jersey, serving the community for 43 years. His three favorite "G's" were Gaily, Golf and Guitar, in that order. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Gail Harris of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three sons, Kenneth Harris and wife Meka of Holmdel, NJ, Richard Harris of Boston, MA and Trevor Beston of Danbury, CT; granddaughter Carly and two grandsons Ryan and Jake; Father-in-law Bob O'Brien and wife Joan of Englewood, FL; sister-"wife"-in-law Debbie Anderson and Stan Lushinsky of East Stroudsburg, PA; two brothers-in-law, Kevin O'Brien and wife Shelley of Apex, NC and Bob O'Brien and wife Emily of Morris Plains, NJ along with numerous nieces and nephews.
