Sister Eileen C. Smith (former Sister Mary Kateri), Sister of Mercy
Sister Eileen, 94 died peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ.
Sister Eileen, the former Sister Mary Kateri, was born in Trenton, NJ and grew up in Beverly, NJ. At an early age she became interested in the Sisters of Mercy and completed her High School education at Mount Saint Mary Academy and entered the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Eileen received a BA degree in French from Georgian Court College, an MA degree in French from Assumption College in MA and a degree in Guidance and Counseling from Rider College, NJ.
She taught for more than 30 years in the Camden, Trenton, Metuchen Dioceses in St. Nicholas School, Atlantic City, St. Mary School and High School, South Amboy and Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville.
In 1970 she began work with Social Services in the Camden and Metuchen Dioceses and later joined the Mount Saint Mary Academy Staff working in the Guidance and Resource Center. In her retirement years she offered her services to Mount Saint Mary House of Prayer.
She retired to Gabriel Hall, the Retirement Center for the Sisters of Mercy and later moved to McAuley Hall Health Care Center where she continued her ministry of Prayer and Hospitality. Sister Eileen was a kind and gentle woman who loved her God and the Path of Mercy that she chose.
She is survived by her dearly loved brother J. Doyle Smith and a half brother Kenneth Smith, a sister, Sister Mary Madeline, RSM of Merion PA.
She is also survived by many caring nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Wake will be from 10:00 to 11:30 am, with the Welcome Home Service at 10:15 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
