Obituary of Mary Ellen Toolan

Mary Ellen Toolan, age 79, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ. Mary Ellen was born in Plainfield, NJ on November 2, 1942, to William F. Toolan of Roscommon Ireland, and Mary Rafferty Toolan of Castlebar County Mayo Ireland.

Prior to her retirement, she was a Bank Officer with United National Bank in Plainfield for over forty years. She was the recipient of a Tribute to Women in Industry Award (TWIN) in 1992 from the Young Women’s Christian Association.

Mary Ellen was a lifelong resident of Plainfield and had a cherished relationship with childhood friend Bobbie Tozzi. Mary Ellen loved Banking and made lifelong friends, Margie Kugelman and Mary Harris.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Plainfield, NJ where she was active in the Holy Rosary Society and assisting with various parish duties. In addition, she was associated with St. Mary’s Stony Hill RC Church in Watchung where she enjoyed time with the Senior’s Group.  The last few years were spent at Brandywine Living at Mountain Ridge in Watchung.

Ms. Toolan was predeceased by her parents.

She is survived by her cousins, Jean McKimm, Diane McKimm Maiorino, Catherine Toolan, Jack Toolan (Pam), Anne Marie Hammell, Jim Toolan (Donna), Cathy Bringuier (Lou), Tom Toolan (Ken) and Maureen Bisgrove (Megan), as well as many other cousins.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A 10 a.m. funeral mass will be held on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stony Hill R.C. Church in Watchung, NJ. Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her loving memory to the Center for Hope Hospice, 1900 Raritan Rd, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
