Obituary of George H. King

George H. King, 83, of Macungie, PA, passed away quietly at home on August 10th after a long illness. Born January 24, 1931, Mr. King graduated from Bernards High School in 1948 prior to joining the Army the following year. He served until 1952, including two years spent in Korea attaining the rank of sergeant. Commencing his career in law enforcement as just the third member of the Watchung, NJ, Police Department in 1958, Mr. King rose through the ranks to the position of Chief of Police in the borough in 1984, a position he held until retirement in 1997. His four decades spent in the chosen profession of public service culminated with election as President of the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association by his fellow chiefs. In addition, he served in both county and international organizations during his tenure as Chief, as well as participating in many seminars and training exercises over the years in his capacity as peace officer. Mr. King spent 23 years as an elected member of the Lebanon Township, NJ, Board of Education. Mr. King's activities also included association in social and charitable organizations such as the Rotarians, the Masons, American Legion and VFW, along with innumerable volunteer positions. George King will be remembered best for years of public service to both country and town; by relations, by friends and by acquaintances for a large and generous spirit, proven out by countless quiet acts of charity and personal assistance over the years; and for a deep and abiding love of family. Pre-deceased by his sister, Ann, and his son, Robert Schmiede, he is survived by his beloved bride of 41 years, Anne, of Macungie; his loving sister, Katherine McAlick and fiance Steve Bebee, of Bound Brook, NJ; sons George, of South Plainfield, NJ, and Wayne, of Long Island City, NY; daughter Patricia Kerl and her husband, Alan; brother-in-law John Ammon and wife, Tisha Ammon of Macungie, PA and brother-in-law George Ammon and wife Phyllis Ammon of Omrond Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews; grandsons Jason and Justin King, and granddaughters Jennifer Mitchell and Katie Beisel; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10am on Saturday, August 16th at Saint Mary's Stony Hill Church, 225 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, NJ.
